And what sorts of chores do they do at what age?
I'm just curious what the norm is.

Dishes, sweeping, feeding cat, puppy and bunny, cleaning up after dog.
This is around 10. But starting earlier was always their rooms cleaned.
My cousin had trained her daughter at 3 to perfectly fold her own laundry. I don't know how but she did. It was so cute to watch.

My son will be two in April. While I don't give him chores to do alone, I do encourage him to help me. When it is time to pick up the toys and put them away, or when we make the bed together, ( he really is not helping with that one), or we put the laundry away he "helps" me. Not only does he love it when I tell him thank you, you are such a big boy, he also is learning responsibilities and how to take care of toys or books etc. While keeping him close by, so I don't worry what it is that he is into at that moment. I have started making him put things back that he is not supposed to have, for a while he took all the dvds out of their cabinet. I was constantly putting them back. Then one day I made him put them all back, granted, they were not straight he had to put them all back and be able to close the door. Later, while he was napping I put them in there right. That was the last time he got them all out...guess he didn't enjoy having to put them all back. Chores are great to teach children responsibility and how it feels when they get the job done and do it well. They soak up these little things that we teach them and use it their entire life. If they never had to do a chore, and never got the praise from doing their best, then they will not know what to strive for in the future, or how to go about getting success.

Yes, my eight year old daughter wipes off the table and counters, feeds and waters our cats, makes her bed,and takes care of her rabbit,She helps me cook dinner, load the washer and do the dishes. Everything she helps with she has asked to help with.If I notice she does'nt have alot of play time I lessen the load, she is just a kid and needs to be a kid. The age all depends on the child, some are more mature then others. Some are just lazy and don't want chores. I started her on them when she was 6 just small things that she wanted to do anyways. She wants to start sweeping the floors and vacuuming, so I'll let her give them a try.If she's o.k. with it then she'll do those also. Never give them more then they can handle. You don't want them to come home from school do their homework, do their chores and then go to bed, kids need play time.

Yeah, start by teaching them to pick-up their toys, to be responsible for the messes they make. As they get older add in simple, little chores like, feeding a pet, or dusting furniture, or tidying their room, or helping fold the socks in the laundry. Young kids are usually happy to be 'big helpers'. You can start doing thes things as soon as the child is walking, and you know they're understanding you.
Of course you don't expect the job to be done to the level you would do it... but it's about teaching responsibility.

Yes I do.

My son who is 17 takes out the trash, takes the dog for a walk and, keeps his room clean.

My daughter who is 10 cleans out the cat box takes the trash from the bathroom to the kitchen, and keeps her room clean (well sort of :))

They alternate on picking up the living room and kitchen.
