At least 6-8 inches of a good snow base is needed for a good ride. You could ride with less or no snow but its not worth the extra wear and tear on the sled. Although grass dragging is always fun.

how much snow do you have? or is there where you are going? As long as ther is at least a couple of feet go hard. just dont' hit no rocks, trees, machinery, ect. and to save your sled, drive on the snow, not on the gravel roads or the highway!
