To me, this is the central question. At some point, something had to be self-generating, otherwise there would only be nothingness. Either our universe is self-generating or something beyond it is.

Yes this is a good point, if something came into being without the intervention of a "designer", how do we know that other things did not also.

The problem with your statement is that you are now back to the beginning, with no explanation of where anything came from. Ancient speculation was that there was a prime mover, that started all of creation into being. While it is not known whether a designer is needed, it certainly appears like one exist. Thus the speculation.
