That was the riddle posed by the Sphynx to Oedipus as recorded by Sophoclese. The answer is man - he crawls in the morning (as a baby), walks on two legs at noon (the middle of his life), and uses a cane to walk as an old man (the evening / twilight of life).

It's the riddle of the Sphinx. Anyone who tried to pass the Sphinx had to answer that riddle and whoever couldn't was cast down over the edge of the cliff.
The answer is: Man. A man (mankind) crawls on all fours as a child, walks on two feet as an adult, and uses a cane late in life.
