Why is it considered a big deal for Jesus to sacrifice his mortal body for us, his mortal body was going to eventually die anyway and he was going to join his father in heaven anyway for eternity so exactly where was the sacrifice.

If Jesus was never going to join his father and live forever now that would have been a sacrifice. Since this was a win win situation and there was nothing to lose where is the sacrifice?

from what I gathered, and to sum it up in a nutshell the sacrifice was just the pain he had to go thru I don't think that was unique to jesus during that time period

I agree with your argument. Really, where is the sacrifice?

He was God. He could do anything. I guess it's more important to believe that God is human and has human qualities and say that he is above all that stuff then for God to actually be above all that stuff. Kind of a oxymoron, really.

Actually having an immortal father Jesus could have chosen not to die at all - he could have just gone back to heaven without ever tasting death.

Another important note is that his death was only one part of the atonement. A big part was the suffering he felt for all sin and sorrow in the world before he died, and another big part was the resurrection and the way He overcame death.

thanks.

edit: yes the sacrifice was the pain he went through, but the point is He went through a lot more than any other person that got crucified. Much of His pain was actually felt in the Garden of Gethsemane (when he was bleeding from every pore). The truth is no mortal could accomplish what He did because we would go into shock and die before an nth of it was completed.

,Well......why don't you try this. Live 30 years relatively well. Making some tables, chairs. Sitting under the heavens and feeling the cool breeze on your skin. Remain celibate through out. Then live the next three years as someone who is hated, mocked, and ridiculed for nothing more than promoting peace and love. Endure beatings. Let people spit on you. The gossip mill is working over time thinking up new ways to smear the good name your ancestors built. Then, as if that wasn't enough, willingly take a long walk carrying the cross that soldiers were going to nail you to. Peacefully lay your body along the massive timbers as they stretch out your arms and feet and hammer them to the wood. They place you on the cross so that even breathing is painful and you hang there in pure agony for three hours knowing that you endure this not for anything you have done but for what your creation has done.
I have to wonder if the person who wrote that question even knows what the definition of sacrifice is?

Um, Christ "was only human," THAT'S THE POINT! Jeez, don't you get that? In order for ANY sacrifice to be a "working sacrifice" and available to all, it has to be "an equal sacrifice to what was lost."

WHAT WAS LOST? Adam lost his perfection and thus eternal life (not immortal, but eternal life).

Therefore, with Christs death as the "Lamb of God," represented EACH year on Passover until he DIED ON PASSOVER as the Lamb of God, (and thus instituted the Lord's Supper to replace Passover from THEN ON), Christ gave his EQUAL HUMAN PERFECT LIFE to repay what ADAM had LOST.

THUS, we are now promised a chance at a future where, "the lion will lie down with the lamb, and a little boy shall lead them." Also, God promises all mankind a chance at PERFECTION once again, through the propitiatary sacrifice of Jesus Christ. What a wonderful gift! NOW, yes, NOW that he is in Heaven again, he has EARNED immortality. But, he was not immortal before and it SAYS THIS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT! If only you would read it!

Good question. "Sacrifice" - the word means to dedicate something to God. What did Jesus sacrifice? His service throughout his life - including willingly submitting to a painful and shameful death.

And the main point is that he did it without ever having committed any sin in his life. You and I (I perhaps more than you, I don't know) deserve to die for our sins, and spend eternity separated from God. But He did not. That's why it was a sacrifice - he not only agreed (so to speak) to take a lowly position as a human, but died a horrifying death when he had no sins purely for the sake of others. That's why it's a sacrifice.

Jesus wasn't making a personal sacrifice like when you give up something. He was a literal, physical blood sacrifice, which is a requirement for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus had to lead a perfect life so that he could be the "spotless lamb" that takes away the sins of the world. And he had to be slaughtered and bleed. The Bible clearly states that "without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin."

In order to do all of this, he had to "empty himself" of his ruling authority and live life as a man in a human body. It isn't about what he had to lose; it is about what we had to gain. He died for us so that we might live.

Jesus was, and still is (because he was raised up) fully MAN and of course fully GOD. But because he became a MAN, (and SIN-LESS) and was crucified on a cross was a sacrifice. You see, when he was on the cross and bore our sins, FATHER GOD turned from LORD JESUS. and to not have GOD in his life the way GOD was in JESUS's life was i'm sure pretty scary!!
Think of it this way..... Let's say YOUR Dad (because you are fully man) wanted you to go and teach people you LOVE some good things, but ALLREADY know before hand that most poeple will HATE YOU and then BEAT YOU so badly that no-one would even be able to tell who you were ANYMORE! On top of all that KILL YOU very slowly and painfully, All for doing something that was going to save the people you LOVED.
But remember, you are a MAN, So it's only fair to think that because you allready know of what's to come, YOU ARE SCARED AND WISH THAT THERE WOULD BE ANOTHER WAY...BUT BECAUSE YOU LOVE YOUR FATHER YOU HAVE TO OBEY. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY.
Us people need a savior if not for the sacirfice of our LORD we would not be accepted by GOD, for GOD cannot look upon sin. Jesus paid that price and we are reconciled with him now!!!
Yes sacrifice it was !!! PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!!

You are forgetting the fact that He never sinned, which made Him the perfect sacrifice. He was the unblemished lamb. The sacrifice came at His death, but the promise came at His ressurection. If He had remained dead and in the grave, then He wouldn't have been who He claimed to be, which is God, and we would still need someone to save us.

The sacrifice was:
He took on our sin, therefore disconnecting Himself with the Father.
He experienced the same pain that anyone else would being nailed to the cross and having the weight of his body on his arms and legs, and His chest laboring to try to get air.

No big deal, to an Atheist.
I am sure they suffer the same every day.

The sacrifice didn't begin with the Crucifixion. Rather, the sacrifice was to come to earth in a human form to begin with. The suffering that He experienced was very real. To those around Him it was very much a sacrifice, for they lost someone very special to them.

You mean apart from the obvious pain He experienced doing the sacrifice? His blood paid for our sin. Romans chapter 3-4 explains that Jesus traded His righteousness for our sinfulness and then paid for our sin with His blood so when the Father looks at us He sees Jesus's righteousness and when He looked at Jesus He saw our sin. A great deal for us but not a great deal for Jesus.
So I am grateful for what He did for me.
