I weigh 282 lbs. I gained alot of weight very suddenly and i was told my thyroid is inactive. I am currently taking medication for it, but now I have a ton of weight to loose. I am already ingesting 1200 cals, 100 cbs and 15 grams of fat a day. How many cals should i be burning while i am at the gym?

I would say around 300-500 a day. 3,500, I believe is a pound, so in a week you will burn a pound. If you build muscle, you will also lose weight as muscle burns fat. Also, if you eat healthier you will continue to lose weight. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle and burn between 300-500 calories a day (or more!), you will lose between 1-4 lbs. a week! Good luck!

Don't just burn calories at the gym. Also burn some on the way there, and on the way back. Burn them everywhere you can.

If you're seriously overweight, you can burn a lot of calories just by walking. The most reliable way to get in the habit of burning a lot of calories might be to simply lose your car keys. If you have to get to work in less than an hour but it would take 7 hours to walk there, just take a bus. Walking to and from a bus burns calories too, and helps you stay in the habit of not using a car.

Walking is more work for an overweight person, and therefore burns more calories. All that extra fat is a load you have to carry, so you get more excercise carrying it.

I hardly see any point in measuring how many calories you burn, because the ones you burn at the gym, where you can measure them, should only be a small fraction of the total.

Make sure to test the thyroid in the morning only. Ask for a free t4, free t3, and TSH. Sometimes the TSH isn't as accurate as the frees. If your numbers aren't in line, weight loss will be impossible. Try researching hypothyroid to learn as much as you can about your condition. I have posted below a couple of links.

Try to burn at least 400 to 500 calories per exercise session. Good luck

This isn't an easy question to answer...it requires calculations and a look at what types of foods you are eating. This website gives you a calculator that estimates how much of everything you'd need...and suprisingly it's pretty close to exact!

In short, as much as you can tolerate (as determined by your doctor), and that number will go up.
