how rude "olivia" i meant that we dont leave our food out on the wrk tops to encourage him up there, of course i feed him and the reason why i dont want him on the work tops, for your info, is because hes got compylabactra (which hes been treated for) and this can pass to humans and i have a 7mth old baby, so no doubt you can understnad why i dont want my cat all over the wrk tops, but incase you cant thats because i prepare my babies and our food on it.

I agree with the first answer - please keep your kitten indoors. Especially if he's not neutered yet. Not only is the risk of accidental death greater, he also has more chance to get into fights and become injured or contracting FLV and FIV. (Feline leukemia and aids.)
Now, that aside...
Try putting some double-sided sticky tape on the counter. He'll jump up there and get stuck, and he won't like it. If you don't have any, you can take regular tape and make circles out of it (make a loop and stick it to itself) with the sticky side out. Set those all over the counter. You can also try various smells to keep him down. If you wipe the counter down with vinegar, that may deter him. (You can even wet it quite a bit with a vinegar and water solution and LEAVE it puddled on the counter.) Or try a bleach cleaner (wipe that one away completely, though!). He may decide he doesn't care for the scent.
Good luck!

That will do nothing to stop a kitten. Your cat is challenging you - it's a game. You've not trained him well enough from the start and need to spend more time interacting in positive ways rather than correcting bad behavior. I've had cats for over 20 years and seen all sorts of "challenging" methods like this. Cupid still does it when I don't pay him enough attention (jumping on the kitchen counter) and if he does it I know that I've neglected him. Cats are oftem like little kids - if they don't get atention by being good then they'll try to be bad and at least get some attention that way.

I don't know whether or not he'll stop jumping on the work surface after he's castrated. This may seem obscure but try putting double sided tape along the edge of your surface. You can rub your hand along one side b4 you put it on so that it will be less sticky so that you'll be able to take it off later without damaging ur surface. Get a low tack one if you can find one. Your kitten won't like the sticky feeling on his paws and should soon learn not to jump up there. Also use this method if he starts using ur furniture for his scratch post.
I used this method on my cat and it worked about 90%. She does jump on occasionally but only if the window is open or she can smell her food, but she never jumps on the other side of the kitchen where food is prepared. Hope this helps you.
He's still young and should calm down with age. Mine now spends most of her time asleep on top of my tortoise's vivarium cuz it's warm. lol
A lot of people are giving you a hard time about this question but if they read your question properly they'd that you are concerned about the germs that can be spread to you and your baby and that you're a responsible cat owner as you're having him castrated as soon as. If only everyone else would have they're cats done then cat rescues wouldn't be over run with unwanted kittens. Well done you!!
I just remembered, cats don't like eucalyliptus oil. Put a few drops on some tissue or cotton wool and leave them on your surface. It also desguises any of the cats own smells. My vet told me that the the week.

It won't stop behavior like jumping and playing. That's just how kittens are! You really should keep him indoors, by the way. Cats can get into terrible trouble if allowed to roam outdoors. If you need to keep him confined, try putting him in a separate room for a while. He will not understand that he is being punished by being put outside and may continue to jump on the counters so you'll put him outside.

Don't worry, cats on the work top is a rather dirty thing anyway, and squirting with water is a vet approved thing... yep, your kitty will start being a gentleman when he's castrated. Well, mine was but he's still a bit naughty actually, he chases my ankles and scratches and that...

neutering him will calm him down and make him less determined to clam hims territory but it wont stop learnt behaviour im afraid.
if water squirting doesnt work try something else . like get an old tin can, put a few pennies in it, cover the top and shake it to make a loud sound that your cat wont like, every time he jumps up.

Neutering the cat wont change it.
My own cat does it, after years of moving her off. we tried putting lemon juice on the side, when we werent in (they're meant to hate the smell) but it made no difference.
I think they're naturally curious to see whats up there, as disgusting as it is. just make sure you wipe the sides etc before preparing food etc

castration isn't some miracul treatment to make animals behave perfectly. I suggest the best course of action is to rehome your cat where he won't be 'launched' or thrown outside. If you are near me I can offer him a good cat loving and experienced home with my other 10 cats.

Then give your cat to a better home. I hope someone reports you for animal neglect. Who do you think you are squirting a cat in the face with water and not giving him food. I sure hope you don't do that to your baby. I am tired of reading about horrible people like you on this website. I am an educated person who advocates for animal rights and it's people like you who are the reason we have to have organizations like the ASPCA. Not getting your animal neutered and booting him outside is also the reason so many poor animals get put down in shelters. Do us all a favor and get yourself some help and a new home for your pets. You are the rude person, not Olivia.
I did read your whole post and I still think you need to find a better home for cat. Squirting your cat with water is MEAN and they don't associate punishment like that. He's not a human! KEEP YOUR CAT INSIDE!!! If you are that concerned with him getting your baby sick, perhaps you shouldn't have gotten a cat with an infant in the first place. Use your brain and stop thinking people are harassing you. I am trying to get it through your head that your cat obviously needs a better home. There are people who actually have animals and take in sick animals that don't have children. People like me dedicate their lives to caring for sick animals. I don't have children, but my cats are my kids. My husband works so I can stay at home a take care of my DIABETIC CAT! So find someone like that for your cat. I'd take him in but I have too much responsibility as is. There are people out there Find them and quit complaining about people insulting you!

it is best to get him done, as when he starts cat adolescence, boys tend to mark their territory by spraying urine, outside, not a problem, but, inside, very smelly. also they tend to fight less, therefore are less lightly to get injured. however, he will still be jumping about, it's a cat thing! they do tend to calm down a little bit when they grow up. good luck!
