The answer might depend on what field you work in. If you work in a customer facing role, and especially in a food handling role, your company has every right to ask you to remove your facial hair, as long as it is not worn for a religious purpose. Most companies nowadays have some sort of a dress code, whether you work in an office with a suit, or if you are a uniformed employee. Keeping good grooming standards and good personal hygiene is part of that. But it seems to me that they have a problem with you "growing" the beard, not the beard itself. And in this case, your company has the right to tell you NOT to grow your beard whilst on duty. If you were to take a month off and come back with a well groomed beard it would probably not be an issue. But if you just look like you haven't shaved in a couple of weeks I even I would tell you to shave it off. Things like these would not be stipulated in your contract, but in the employee handbook, and you are bound by the company procedures and policies of that book too. You might want to check that before you refuse to shave.
