My grocery store puts it in a bin a few days before the sell by date and sells it at a discounted price. If I buy it that way I put it in the freezer when I get home. But if it hasn't sold by the sell by date it is thrown away.

They usually discount the meat prior to it's sell by date. I save alot of money this way! After that, if nobody buys it, they generally throw it away. Sad, but true.

i work for a grocery store...as the date approaches, they discount it...and what does not sell, we freeze and donate to an organization called philabundance which then distributes to the needy in the city or ends up in the soup kitchens...if the meat does not look as tho is sellable, turns to an unattractve color, they throw it away...

They are supposed to throw it out, but some places with no integrity will change the freshness date and sell it to you rotten!

If it is hamburger, they take it to the back room and repackage it wrapping fresh looking burger around the dark burger. It is then sold as fresh hamburger. Haven't you ever opened a package of hamburger and found the inner meat to be darker than the outer meat? It's a common practice. Another common practice is to freeze the meat when it almost out of date and save it to sell during a special. Frozen meat is always darker than fresh meat and people don't realize the age.

They put it in bags, and the rubbish men come pick it up. Just like every other business, just like every other house.
