You need to hear the words rather than just reading them, reading helps you learn more vocabulary, but she'd be best getting the CDs with speaking on them.

I have learned Spanish and even learned Urdu as well. I have studied texts for Spanish and it is good to consult dictionaries for vocabulary. But, I have gained the most knowledge by finding a person to converse with on a regular basis. Formal lessons may not be needed. Sometimes they can be too formal and cumbersome. Also, this can be the case with texts. However, the library has an extensive resource list and so does the internet. But, after finding a person to speak with and ask questions, this is the most comprehensive way. If your mother is capable of accessing the internet, she might want to try www.mylanguageexchange.com or www.phrasebase.com Both are helpful. Alternatively, she might find a person in her area to speak with. Forming a relationship is the best way of learning the language and culture. SHe might also enjoy www.bbc.co.uk and click on languages and there are courses on many languages.

She can borrow books from the local library. Most libraries have a foreign language collection that may include books on tape so that she can hear what she is learning. They may also have videos to borrow. I would start with the library first and see how well she does before spending money on lessons.

My daughter found spanish speaking boyfriends a very good system of learning but my husband wasn't keen for me to try that. I imagine you mum may have a similar problem. I advise her to get the Michel Thomas learn spanish cds. They are available from amazon, they are amazing.

I live in Spain so my spanish is quite passable. Tell your mum to drop me an e mail if she wants any more help.

She can learn from books. In some places there are shows that teach kids and adults on tv. The library may also have tapes you can check out.

Good luck

Most libraries offer Lingaphone (or similar) courses for hire, there would be a charge. These have books and tapes (or disc)
But she may enjoy doing an evening class at the local adult education centre

Lessons is better. But best is to get Spanish or Mexican friends and talk with them. Go out to meet spanish speaking people. Go to Fiesta restaurants to meet and talk to people Go to the theater to watch films or subtitled TV films. Go to danse. I would say, don't go to libraries unless she goes with a friend who already speak Spanih as a mother tongue.
Just speak, don't be stoped by grammar, it will come later.
Cheers.

She can learn from books, that's for sure, I did it with English, but once she has enough vocabulary, and knowledge from them, she will need to practice to improve it.

I am willing to help through MSN or any messenger.

Good Luck to your mum!

We have a saying: Más vale tarde que nunca... I think in english is: Is better later than never
