I truly believed and accepted Jesus as my personal savior. I knew Jesus and god existed. Then I changed my mind. Was I a Christian as a child?

Jesus said “He who believes and is baptized will be saved;"
I believed and I was baptized so I was a Christian. Now I am not.

You never connected in the first
place, or you wouldn't have left.
Connecting is not just faith. It is
a real event that happens and is
different for different people. Now
that you are of age, what changed
your mind? Don't let that inner
child die.

It sounds like you didn't grow your relationship with Jesus. It's not enough to say "Jesus is my savior." You need to surrender your life to Him and make Him Lord of your life. I, like you, thought I was a Christian when I was a child, but I had never really accepted the gift of salvation. You can believe that Jesus was who the bible says He was in the same way you believe that George Washington was the first U.S. president--strictly historically. But until you reach out and take the gift of salvation and make it your own you are not really a Christian. My suggestion to you now would be to revisit the whole thing now that you're older. Compare your life to the Ten Commandments. These are the standards God expects us to live by. How do you stack up? If you've ever broken even one, you are in need of a Savior.

The word "believe" used in Scripture is an active belief. In the New Testament saving belief is always a life-changing belief. Perhaps you believed like I once believed in Santa Claus. In my opinion that isn't the kind of belief that transforms or saves you. The Bible says that even the demons believe in God and shudder; their belief does not lead to their salvation.
Only you and God know for sure if you ever truly believed, but I have truly experienced Jesus and how he has impacted my life and can't imagine how I could ever walk away from that. The fact that you changed your mind would lead me to believe that you never had that kind of life-changing belief of your own. Maybe you should spend some time talking to God about this issue.

I'd say so. I considered myself a christian as a child and I don't think I even outright accepted jesus as my savior, I just did whatever my parents told me to.

The Bible NEVER mentions "accepting Jesus" as a way to receive salvation. Read Acts and see what everyone there was told to do.

Maybe you let religion get in the way of being a Christian. Don't confuse the two.

There is more to becoming a Christian than merely believing in Christ Jesus. To become a real Christian, we are told that we must HEAR the WORD in John 6:45, Jesus said, “It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.” We are also told so in Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. We are told the we must BELIEVE in Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. We are also told so in Mark 16:16, Jesus said “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” and in John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. We are told that we must REPENT (or turn from sin) in Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Also in Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent. We are told to CONFESS CHRIST in Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. We are also told in 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. We are to be BAPTIZED according to Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” and Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. We are to CONTINUE to be FAITHFUL UNTIL DEATH according to Revelation 2:10c Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. We also know that Paul wrote in Romans 14:12 each of us shall give account of himself to God. It is important that we not ignore what is written, change what is written, or add to what is written in the New Testament which is our Christian Guide. Have a great week.

You missed out on the "Endure to the End" part of it. If you think one act of obedience can save you without any others, well you are missing the point.
