The nerves in your lower back are imflamed and being pressed, thus causing the numbness and throbbing. I assume you were injured somehow, if not, you may have degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis or arthritis. All will cause the symptoms you said. Since the doc has sent you for an MRI, I think you are looking at spending some time with this doc. Physical therapy will likely be ordered and you will meet often to see how things are going.

Because you have a pinched nerve that sounds like sciatic damage. It can affect the opposite side because of the way your spine is compressed. I hope you begin to feel better with treatment. I have the same thing. It really hurts. Ask your doctor to get another MRI for the right side as well just to make sure. Your doctor also should be explaining these symptoms to you. You could have spur formation on the lumbar and sacral spine area in addition. The spurs grow and begin to compress the nerves causing the numbness and throbbing as well as the pain in the buttocks and thigh area.
