Atheism... the lack of belief in "god".
Agnostic... doesn't believe in god but don't deny that one COULD exist... someone who's in the "middle" of the argument or doesn't subscribe one way or another.

Agnostics believe in the possibility of God. They also believe the possibility that God does not exist. Some agnostics really don't care that much, while others are actively seeking out what they believe.
Atheists, on the other hand, have come to the conclusion that they believe there is no God.
Many individuals may fall in between these two categories. For example, some agnostics may believe in the possibility of a god or gods, but have come to the conclusion that the God of the Bible does not exist. Another example might be an atheist who is very spiritual, and believes that we have some sort of afterlife, but does not believe that there is any higher power.
Coming from a Christian perspective, the main difference is how open-minded an individual is about God, Jesus, and Christianity.

An atheist does not believe in god and/or believes that there is no god.
An agnostic sits on the fence and believes there is no way to be sure.. These include the people who argue that you cannot prove the existence (or non-existance) of a god. It also includes people who don't believe in any particular faith, but feel there might be some higher power.
A lot of atheists used to be agnostics.

An atheist does not believe in God whereas an agnostic says it is not possible to know whether there is a God or Gods. Agnostics believe the truth or answer is beyond our reach to say for sure one way or another. Atheists find the possiblity of there being a God or Gods so remote and implausible given our current evidence they feel its pretty conclusive there is not.

There's a whole argument over this. It's kind of vague and confusing.
Atheist literally means "without theism" meaning you have no belief in god. It does not mean that you "know" there is no god, although that is what most people take it to mean. So there are "weak atheists" who are basically agnostic to my mind, and "strong atheists" who think that god definitely does not exist.
Agnostic means you don't know if god exists. There is also "strong agnosticism" which says that not only do you not know, there is no way for you to know.
I would consider my self a strong agnostic in general, but a strong atheist with regard to the biblical Omni-God (omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent).

An atheist does not believe in a personal god, or the likelihood of it existing and is more in tune with a realistic examination of the universe and the world we live in and attempting to understand the marvels of nature through expanding our knowledge with scientific based understanding.
An agnostic does not believe in the personal god being put forward by religions but is open to ideas of a cosmic force of some sort. This is contrary to the atheist view of having a sound scientific basis, and such people are on the verge of believing in pseudo science. After all, there is absolutely no evidence to support the idea of any 'cosmic energy' or what not.
Please do not confuse the two.

An Atheist rejects all religious belief and denies the existence of God. Whereas an Agnostic questions the existence of God, heaven, etc. in the absence of material proof and in the unwillingness to accept supernatural revelation. In other words, an Agnostic does not believe in something it cannot prove to be true or actually see, such as a scientist.
Hope this helps

An agnostic person is one who believes there is no way of knowing whether there is or there is not a god.
An athiest person does not believe there is a god.
There are more complexities, especially for the agnostics, but that is about the most basic explanation.
