It acted like it was in neutral but it wasn't. Is that normal? I drive a 2005 Impala.

Automatic or manual transmissions?..

When your in a sudden stop as you did:

Manual Trans: You must apply the clutch to disengage the transmission, If this doesn't happen you may have done damage to the engine or the trans due to stalling.

Automatic Trans: Doesn't have this type of "disengaging" system, However if your idle was set lower then normal the engine simply stalled.

There are new systems that when in a accident the engine will shut off during an abnormal car movement. i.e. roll over etc.

That is normal. There is a sensor that will shut your engine down so it doesn't catch fire. When you put your brakes on that hard, there is a good chance you might hit another car, guard rail, etc. So, it's a safety feature and your's works!! Congrats!
