I want to file my taxes now, but I am having a hard time getting the companies EIN number. Somebody told me that it is public record and that you are entitled to this. How true is this? And how can I go about getting this number so then I can go and file?

thanks you guys. I just went to freeerisa and there was not a charge. They have your first 3 searches for free. I got it. And last year was the first time that I worked for this company, so I did not receive a W2 from them last year.

If you did not receive a W-2, does that mean that your employer isn't sending any paperwork to the IRS? What has been listed on your pay stubs as far as withdrawls? If they're listing Federal Taxes, FICA, etc then your employer is responsible to send that money to the government. If you're working for the same company, last years return would have the EIN info.

Try and ask them.
If not, then you wait until your W-2 comes out. They have until 1/31/07 to postmark them.
By filing early without a W-2, you run the risk of making a mistake and having to file an amended return, having your return delayed or even being audited.
I would wait.

BTW, if you file online, the IRS will not accept or review returns until 1/12 through sites like H&R Block or on 1/16 through the IRS free file program for those who qualify.
Also, through those sites you will need not only their EIN # (Federal Tax ID #) but also their STATE tax ID ## and the info how much state & city tax(if applicable) has been withheld.

Look on a previous W-2 from them. If you don't have one, call their corporate office and ask someone there. Or ask a coworker to look at one of their old W-2 forms.

(Freeerisa.com charges for the lookup of an EIN.)

www.freeerisa.com

But...if you're doing it electornically you'll need more than EIN number.

I'm not sure but it could be on your pay stub.
