Broke ribs sux. All U can do is get pain meds & deal with it. About 6 weeks to heal. I know it hurts to breath do anything. I've had 3 not all that ling ago. Keep in mind on pain meds, Ur goin to have to get off of em so I suggest U take them at the 1st 3 weeks then start gettin off of em or Ur goin to have another problem. Hang in there.

Are your ribs taped? they should be if broken. Medication should work, but if not ask your doctor. Remember that this takes a few weeks (like anything else broken) to begin to heal and the first couple of weeks are the toughest. The doctor is aware of this and probably feels anything stronger (or even what they are giving you now) could become adictive and he's trying to save you future grief. If you can, grit your teeth, drink milk and relax as much as you can. If on the other hand you feel the pain is because it's not healing right then contact your doctor for an x-ray to make sure some part of the bone isn't putting pressure on some organ.

ok from what i've heard the best idea is to focus on the pain.
very closely and very carefully. breathe and feel exactly the pain. is it sharp and stabbing or it is dull and throbbing? is there pressure? what is the exact nature of the pain? spend a lot of time actually feeling the pain. move around tiny bits at a time and see how the feeling of pain changes. that is my suggestion.
pain contains important information and paying really close attention to it will yield better understanding.

Call your doctor and tell him/her that the pain medication they gave you is not working. They can give you something else. That's all you can do for broken ribs. That and take it easy, don't lift anything.

Well, if activity limitations, rest, ice, medications, including narcotics, are not giving relief, then consider an inter-costal nerve block. This will have to be done by a pain specialist. It will be expensive.
