You can easily keep them from ripping up your canopy and anything else in the house. You just have to teach them while they are still young that the canopy is not to be used for scratching, and they will learn to avoid that behavior just like young kids. I got my cat as a kitten and we decided not to have her declawed so basically what we did to teach her not to scratch anything is: Whenever she would go to scratch anything she was not supposed to,say.. the bedsheets or the curtains, we would say the word "No" very firmly and gently lift her paws off whatever she was scratching and move her away so she would connect the word No with dissaproval of that action, and then often we would place her on her scratching pad and move her little claws on it to show her that it is ok to scratch that if she feels the urge : ) It worked extremely well and for the 2 years we have had her now, she has never ripped up anything in the whole house. (except a few plastic bags and cardboard boxes she got annoyed at) LOL Good luck!

Here's an idea - put the canopy up on a vacation and test them. Anytime I've wanted to test my cats (when they were kittens) I always start something as early as possible on a weekend and then watch them closely all weekend. This allows me time to take things down or remove them if needed - and also gives me time to watch them. The key is plenty of time to spend watching them!
My thought would be no they won't since you have not noticed it with drapery in the house - and I'm assuming you do have drapes.

Hey its not a dumd question, you could get some of this spray that doesn't smell and spary the stuff on the canopy, and what this spray dose is keep the cats away, it does not hurt them they just don't like the smell. This stuff will make them stay off.You can get this stuff at a local store like Wal Mart, K mart. I know it works because I used it on my counters.

Get a spray bottle, put it on mist, and if they start to climb it, squirt them with the water. It won't hurt them, but they won't like it. Secondly, don't let them in the bedroom unsupervised. That way you'll know if they are climbing on it... I would think that the canopy will be a temptation from them, and it may take some training to keep it safe. Then again, you may have no problems... just keep your eyes on them!

kittens usually view anything hanging or dangling as a toy. they may also try to climb up the curtains, it depends on how energentic they are. my youngest would climb up anything, so I don't have any curtains or drapes in the house..I went with blinds instead and she tries to get up those once in a while. if the canopy doesn't go all the way to the floor or bed, you could try putting it back up, but if there is a breeze they could flutter and be as tempting as a string toy.

good question. Don't declaw!!!!! please. it is mean. Keep a scratching post in the room to deter them from scratching the canopy. Keep their nails trimmed. Go to the groomer if you have to it is around $5. You can also get these little plastic nail covers. I have never used them so I am not sure what the adhesive is, but they are pretty neat. It looks like your cats have painted nails! You can gett them from pet stores.

If you goto the pet store...ask the clerk about bondary items... these are things you spray or sometimes it comes in a powder form... i got it when i got my new furniture and didnt want my cat clawing it up... you have to religously spray it every day but and you can not smell it... the cat can though... and they dont like the smell ... i have heard that you can use orange peels the same way... they dont like the citus smell i guess...
i know the boundary indoor/outdoor cat repellent worked for me... and it wasnt that expensive either (especially compared to new furniture).

If you put it up. Put your cats somewhere else. That way they won't get excited by seeing something new to play with. Once it's up. see how they react. Bring a water bottle with you incase they start to mess with it. Who knows, they might now be interested at all. My kitten showed no interest at all when he first saw the christmas tree...

If you have the cat declawed like most indoor cats it is not a problem... It is best to have this done when they are spayed or nuetered. It is not painful to them as they are asleep during the process and it doesnt cost much at all .....
