The primary job of priest is to represent the people to God and vice-versa. He also does other religious duties. The Old Testament had them, and many other religions have them. Christianity, however, does not - the New Testament never mentions anything related to having priests. Overseers (=bishops), deacons, yes - but not priests. That's an old testament concept ported over to the church of today. In fact, the NT specifically says Jesus is our high priest, that his sacrifice is once for all time and all people. The NT church has no need of priests.

A priest is a person who is used as a mediator between another person and God. The thought behind needing a priest is that only priests can communicate with God. The Bible teaches that God is able to hear from anyone at anytime. Instead of priests, the New Testament teaches that we should use pastors. A pastor acts as a adviser in spiritual matters using the Bible as the ultimate source for truth.

One of the original purposes for priests hundreds of years ago was to read to the people. Literacy rates were non existent in the middle ages, reserved for nobility and the clergy. Until the invention of the printing press wide scale distribution of the bible was not possible so in order to hear the word of God people had to congregate together in one place. One of the major reasons for churches.

When Jesud died on the cross the curtain in the temple tore open from top to bottom. That opened the way for us to approach God. Jesus is our high priest and no one else has the right to represent him. The Bible even states that we should call "no man father."

Apparently they believe they have the market cornered on how to interpret their religious tradition and believe they have the power to "absolve" you of "sins" by some "permission" from "god". I don't believe in their claims though.
