New York doesn't let insurance companies charge lower rates to younger people and higher rates to older people. So if you're young, it's overpriced; if you're old, it's underpriced.

Since younger people don't want to pay higher than they need, they often go without, which drives the cost up even further. Social policy at its finest. Fewer people insured and higher rates.

Depending on your income, you might qualify for Healthy NY or Family Health Plus. NY's website might have the directions, if not, social services would, or in Orange County, there's a group called Maternal Infant Services Network - they help you find out what you qualify for and walk you thru the process. The state picks up a portion of the premiums, so it is the same plans as if you bought them privately, but less expensive. (It's the BEST thing Pataki ever did!) If you make more than the allowed income, contact your local insurance broker and sometimes they can shop the best deal for you. My parents had to do that two years ago.
