You are a parent, not a mentor. Protocol should be a certain way of doing things that is accepted by the majority. You do need a little tact in dealing with your child, but I also feel they need to learn that you are the authority over them. You are the rule maker, the decision maker, and the person who comes up with the consequences for unacceptable behaviors. You are not there to be their friend. They will have plenty of those elsewhere.
