I give thumbs down when;
1) the answer is incorrect.
2) the answer is off topic. (Someone clearly misunderstanding the question.)
3) when the answerer copy and pastes long, long passages from a wiki and then give the link to the wiki. A short comment and the link is enough. I assume that the questioner knows how to follow links, and possibly even knows how to find the wiki for themselves.
4) when people use on-line translators to translate answers or give links to on-line translators to the questioner. On-line translators are bad when they are at their best and should be avoided, especially when people expects serious and valid answers.
5) when people is clearly point gaming.
6) when the answer is made to harass people rather than giving an answer.

Well, giving them a thumbs-down doesn't necessarily help me get a best answer, so that's certainly not on my list of reasons.
I don't know anyone on this site well enough to like or dislike them.
I don't give thumbs-down's to people who have posted what I just posted, because I know that many of us are typing at the same time...they probably didn't realize I had just posted the same thing.
I wouldn't know if I got a thumbs-down or not, nor would I know who gave me the thumbs-down, so I certainly wouldn't do so for vengeance.
Usually, I give a thumbs-down when the answer is inaccurate, or when the answer is just lame, and not providing an answer to the asker.

I usually give someone a thumbs down only if they give what I consider to be a stupid (very wrong) answer. I don't keep track of who's who on here, so I never give someone a thumbs down because I don't like them personally (I don't know anybody, so it is not personal).
Giving others thumbs down when they answer a question that you answer, because you want choosen as the best, seems to be silly, because it has nothing to do with who gets chosen.
To be honest, I am more likely to give other people a thumbs down if I have gotten one myself (especially if I put a lot of effort into trying to give a good, honest answer, and I don't feel like I deserved one just because someone disagreed with me), but I still only give a thumbs down to people whom I consider to be just plain wrong, or lazy, not because I am jealous of their right answer. That would solve nothing.

there you go H! they arrive from human beings like Worstans who basically haven't any options! lol so pay no interest. i personally desire yahoo might want to eliminate thumbs down and in consumer-friendly words have thumbs up! it really is a much more effective helpful position. Then human beings might want to must have a good verbal arguement as to why they don't like ones answer. it would want to carry about more effective useful debate. contained in the interim, that query become very ideal, I regarded at each position that individuals were from, and it made it on more effective of a own factor. by no ability options H, about the thumbs!

I hardly ever give thumbs down unless the answer is vulgar.
If it is insanely stupid I just ignore it.
If the person tried or if it is semi-clever, I give a thumbs up. I try to give as many thumbs-up as I can.

I'm like Cranky. I only give thumbs down for a wrong answer or a really stupid answer. I haven't been around here long enough to like or dislike anyone else here. I haven't even started to recognize the names yet.,

I give a thumbs down when
- an answer is irrelevant and/or unhelpful, like "don't know myself"
- an answer seems to me wrong or misleading
Here in "Languages", I always give a thumbs down when anyone pastes nonsense from automatic translators in his answer or when the answer just consists of a link to an automatic translator. The results of automatic translators are absolute rubbish (when used on full sentences) and everyone should know that by now.

I've done it because the answer is wrong or it doesn't make sense. I'm not that petty to give anybody a thumbs down because they are disliked. I'm not very "liked" on here, especially by those who are homosexual, because of my strong, blunt opinions/thoughts.
**Forgot to add that I'm often stalked by these "unseen weirdos" who like to delete and censor my posts at Yahoo...
