I am trying to cook a semi-romantic dinner for my partner because I had the day off. I decided on crab-stuffed portobello mushrooms (unfortunatly we only had imitation crab, and it's a snow storm outside). Any recommendtions for wine for this dish?

Well, I'm a red drinker, so my limited whites are
Riesling
Late Harvest Riesling
Chardonney DelVento
Couple Pinot Grigios and Sauvignon Blancs
and a 1/2 Chardonney and 1/2 Chenin

I would think that a nice Sauvignon Blanc would compliment the mushrooms and bring out the flavor of even imitation crab...

However, if you are stuck in a snowstorm, any old Pinot Grigio or Trabbiata would be fine. What's in your cellar?

Best wishes!

A full-bodied white would be good -- though if it's snowing hard you may have to settle for whatever you've got in the house.

Crab (and imitation even more so) has a sweet flavor, so I'd go with something that had a lot of fruit but was fairly dry, either a chardonnay or a dry chenin blanc.

If you get a break in the weather, though, try to locate a viognier. It's a fairly recent trend that I've started to see in stores & restaurants; it's a French grape with a very floral aroma but it's typically made into a very dry wine. It'd be great with crab -- I had some with a Chinese dish made with lobster and scallops, and with crab it would be excellent.

And if you're on a budget... we had scallops and crawfish last night (in the classic Coquilles St. Jacques manner, with mushrooms and sherry in a bechamel sauce), and served our favorite cheap white, an Australian chardonnay from Jacobs Creek (about $6). It was just right with the sweet seafood and mushrooms, which are right up your alley.

Love portobello stuffed mushrooms! To your question--the traditional red with meat, white with fish is fast going out the window. I prefer a light wine with fish, which could be white to pale rose. Chardonnay is good, a rose, & I also like harmony in the colours on the table! Don't have my wine list, but I bet someone else will be of better help to you. Basically wanted to say that the red & white thing isn't carved in stone anymore, & you can make your own choice. (I wouldn't want it too "sweet," either.)

well most imitation crab is made of fish Pollock, i would assume its still tech. seafood....so a nice white wine.... but really anything you or he really like ....pairing a wine with the food really isn't going to kill the mood your trying to set...unless hes a snob...he will love the effort...

Any white wine in a box.... if you are stranded, you'll have plenty of time to drink it!
