Yes it is very normal for your baby to sleep more with a cold, They don't feel well, and sleep its the best thing for them! Also the medication could be causing drowsiness.
Second part I would give your baby he rice cereal at every feeding if your baby has reflux bad, and spits up all the time. If it only happens at night then I would only give it to them at night. It will not hurt your baby to give it to them at every feeding. The cereal could make your baby sleep more to. Your baby gets more of a solid in there stomach (rice cereal) and does not need to wake up as often to feed.
I hope this helps. I know having colds sucks, we all have them in my house! Mother of one and number 2 on the way!

The sleeping is normal I would think..between the cold and medication, baby needs more sleep. I know when I have a cold I want to rest...just am not able to. lol
As for the reflux, I defer to other, more knowledgeable parents. I have never had any experience with it, and I come from a family of 7 siblings, I have 2 daughters, 16 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews!
Good luck! I'm sure your baby will be just fine, now and in the future!

I suggest that you get a second opinion from a pediatrician it sounds like you don't trust this one. I have never heard of feeding a 5 week old food. That goes against anything I have ever learned about babies. How did the Dr. determine reflux did the child have any Fluroscopy studies? If not I would love to know how the Dr. figured that one out. I say dump the Dr!!

Sickness tires them out and the medication may also tire him out. The more likely reason for him sleeping alot would be the rice cereal (it's filling and he's just not hungry to wake up). I would just give him the rice cereal at bed time but the best thing to do is phone your doctor and ask him to be sure. It's rare that they recommend cereal at such a young age (it's hard on their tummies to digest) and it's better to be certain about how much to give without stressing their bodies out.

1. Don't be alarmed by the extra sleeping, unless he's sleeping all day and all night...or he seems to not be coherant when he is awake. The decongestant is probably making him drowsy. Watch for fever and alert the doctor to any fever since the baby is so young.
2. Give him the rice cereal (or oatmeal cereal) at every feeding. He's five weeks old, so he can handle a little cereal. 1 teaspoon is not a lot.
Good luck, mom! You and baby will be fine!

Yes it is normal to sleep more when they are sick. Just think of when you are sick... Want to sleep more, right? As far as the formula and rice cereal. I think that's a weird recommendation for such a young baby because of reflux. I mean I'm not saying your doctor is wrong, I've just never heard of it. I would call him and clarify what he wants you to give your baby though. Good luck with your baby. Make sure you are on top of the cold and if the baby's symptoms get worse, definitely go back to the ped. b/c with such a young baby there is always risk of RSV.

If it says now to not apply it to children below 3 months, then do not chance it. i do not comprehend why they have it on there, i do not comprehend what checks they have carried out, yet i comprehend that contained in the guy Vicks the Vicks company continuously had "do no longer use on children below 2 years" or some thing similar on the sphere and folk did not pay interest, then years later even as they got here upon that it brought about issues all of us were given all offended about how Vicks become putting children in risk even as they'd, all alongside, warned now to not apply it to children below 2. So in the experience that they say do not do it, do not do it. there is a few reason, and larger useful chance-free than sorry. You stated you've a vaporizer... do you've a humidifier? The vaporizer places menthol contained in the air that helps split mucus, yet i hit upon an excellent type of people confuse a humidifier with a vaporizer. you ought to have both, they both help. i comprehend that my humidifier has a niche to positioned a vaporizer pad, so as that they are blended, yet both are so helpful even as somewhat one is ill. (Shoot, even as i'm ill they're helpful) also, I honestly have got here upon that boogy wipes are a good product. they have aloe, nutrition E, eucalyptus, and saline contained in the wipes, so what I do is gently rub the nostrils, wait some seconds, then wipe. maximum boogers pop out at that factor. Saline drops are your suitable chum, in spite of the undeniable fact that the boogy wipes are an staggering product besides, a minimum of from my journey.

It's ok that the baby is sleeping more. When children are sick they sleep more, plus the cereal in the formula satisfies them more and helps them sleep, too. My son used to spit up his bottle if I didn't burp him every ounce he took. I had to put cereal in my son's formula when he was 3 weeks old, he wanted to eat every 2 hours! Putting the cereal in his formula made his sleep better, and he didn't want to eat as often. He's 22 now, and still wants to eat constantly! lol Good luck

Im not sure about cereal for a baby that young, But I used to boil rice and use extra water to make rice water for the bottle and a tad of sweetner, then lukewarm chicken broth bottle also for my babys colds that seemed to work fine. I tend to shy away from meds for babies. Sleep is part of the healing process.
