Outlook Express Mac OS 9?

On my outlook express email it shows that I have more new emails than actuallly show up in my inbox. What would cause this?

It's probably counting unread message as new, no matter how old they are. Scroll back and see if you've got a bunch of old unopened messages, perhaps months old. Also, if you have mail rules which automatically move messages to other folders as they are received (like junk), those will still count.
