Hi, my two year old Great Dane/Shepherd mix is shuttering. He sleeps, eats and plays like normal, he just starts shuttering once in a while. I explained it to the vet like "when you get a sharp pain and tense up" that's what it's like... he does this about every ten seconds, but not all the time. He has an appt on Thursday for the vet, but I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced this with their dog?
Thanks!

It's hard to explain exactly what it feels like, it's just like he has small spasms. Like he's tensing up just for a few seconds then it stops, then ten seconds later he's doing it again...

Your dog might have epilepsy. What you're describing sounds very much like what my fiancee's old dog had. I hope I'm wrong...

Does the dog walk, lay down, and otherwise normal? Does he seem to be in pain? Sounds almost like muscle spasms, but what would be causing this? Seizures wouldn't be every 10 seconds........that would mean he is in a seizure almost continuesly. I would watch how he walks, does he limp, does he favor one side or the other, and for sure go to the vet and have him looked over. Write back and let us know what you found out, I'm interested.

It sounds like seizures. It could be a number of things... it's great that you're taking him to the vet soon.

Your vet can better diagnose his issue and offer some managable solutions. Dogs with epilepsy or seizures can keep them under control with medications. I have known other pet owners with the same issue (seizures, that is) and their animal lived out a healthy age for the breed and the seizures were controlled by medication and diet.

Good luck!

What exactly do you mean by "shuttering"? It sounds like it is having spasms or convulsions. Is it the whole body that shutters? I'm sure the vet will check everything out. Good luck

i have had three dogs do this. the first two had distemper and died, but the most resent doggie just had a sprain that was making him twitch. i was told it is very unlikely for an older dog with all of its shoots to get distemper. did he have a runny nose or upset tummy then get better before this. if his whole body is shuttering i would take him tothe vet asap. i hope he gets better! Good luck.

It sounds like a form of epilepsy. Although episepsy is mostly in purebred dogs, I'd get it checked out- which it seems your already doing. If it is epislepsy, it's not really treatable, but it's not fatal or even really harmful, either. If he has a severe "shudder", just try massaging his muscles a little and giving him lots of affection. Poor thing.

The way you describe it may be the problem. He could be getting a sudden sharp pain and is reacting to it. Dogs can't tell you they hurt, they just react. I'm glad you are taking him to the vet.

She may possibly be having Epileptic Seizures. I'm glad you are taking her to the vet. He'll be able to help control it.
