Abs are a body part you can exercise four to five times a week and be fine.
running( you must get a good solid sweat going)to reduce body fat percentage, a good low fat nutritional diet so you not taking in any more fat and crunches and legs lifts at various speeds and repetitions. A a couple of different work out tapes with different styles would be ideal. Oh ya.....ummm.. time , time is the most important. Allow 6-8 weeks of stead three to four workouts a week. Keep in mind when you start start slow and easy with the running and the ab exercise. Too hard, too fast your body while subconsciously stop you from working out. The natural endorphins with decrease and the natural high you were getting will no longer exist. Commitment over time is probably the biggest mistake people make. A nice body is like fine wine it take time. Any quick fixes with ruin it.

You should do exercises that work all 5 basic ab muscle groups (upper, lower, obliques, lats, back). Check out The Abs Diet for some great information and detailed exercises. (It's not a "diet" book.)

Actually, you can do tons and tons of crunches, etc to tone your tummy, but unless you get rid of the fat sitting on top of the muscle you'll never see results. You need to do cardio and get rid of the fat, then you will see the stomach of your dreams.
