Helping the poor takes self sacrifice.
Did you know that the $ spent on 1 months supply of trash bags could be another's income in another country.

I have helped the poor since before I was spiritual. I am for the less fortunate being constantly offered the opportunity to receive the help needed to educate them how to be self sufficient. Some people's knowledge is so poor that they have become complacent being non-productive. Then there are others who dont desire to be productive. Until someone has the desire within themselves to become productive, it doesn't mean they shouldnt be helped ............... but more so that the person(s) giving the help must know that help alone probably wont make a person productive.
In other words, when a person is helped in any situation rather than helped to get out and stay out of the situation, most likely the person receiving the help will continue to need help.
Helping a person be delivered out of a situation and educating them how to stay out is far more rewarding and productive than helping them in a situation and leaving them as they were found.
I desire to be delivered out of or from lack, need and want rather than helped tremendously and still lack, need or want.

If they're poor because of a natural cause like Horricane Katrina, then yes I do help them. But if they're poor b/c they failed to get an education, then no I don't help them. They shouldn't burden others with the mistakes they make. I help them by being kind, offering small cash, or advising them in a positive way.

Helping the poor is very important. One of the most important things about it is that we should help the poor so that stupid politicians won't spend all our tax money on stupid government programs that are supposed to help the poor but usually don't.
I help support my synagogue, and they do things to help poor people (both Jewish poor people and non-Jewish poor people).
Individuals should help the poor, and houses or worship should help the poor, and even private companies may want to help the poor. Government aid should be on a strictly emergency / last resort basis.

I usually help them through my fast offering (fast once a month, and give the money I would have spent on food to help the needy). I prefer that method because I know 100% of my money goes to that purpose.
But to further comment, I also really prefer programs that help the poor help themselves. That goes to things like their education or vocational training so they can find decent paying jobs and become the sort of people that can help other poor people too.

lazy poor people should not be helped.
disabled, either by physical condition or circumstantial condition should be helped. one of the best helps you can give them is by not giving them money for nothing.
Writing a sign " will work for food" is not a job. do not pay them for it. if you have a job for them then you can offer it to them.
if there is a homeless shelter in your community, direct them to that. if not direct them to your church or the nearest church. and support your homeless shelter or church that provides a job service for these people.
taking care of the poor is a godly thing to do. if they do not want help from a church because they might preach to them then maybe they should go to the source of their problems drug dealer, liquor store and claim them as their god and see how they provide for them.
now some people have chemical imbalances which causes them to have mental problems. there should be detox places where the imbalance can be identified and supplimented with nutrition to make them well before they are expected to participate in society.
united way is a nonsecular front line agency for helping these people as well if you want to voluteer time or money.

Donating money to helpless hungry aids infested dying every ten second babies and children in Africa (as the 700 club says). Or donate to a church, goodwill, salvation army,or people in China with no bibles. I'm only a kid who gets no allowance, but if I get much money from babysitting,I give to those guys wrapped in blankets on street corners shaking cups for money, and at Holiday time,I give as much to the bell ringers asking for money as I can. I think if you can,it is great to help the poor,it can humble you,and teach you so much. God said in the bible,if you feed a hungry person, you are feeding Him,if you give someone your shirt, your giving God your shirt. God wants you to give from your heart, not to look good. And to the person who said people dont deserve help if they cant get an education, open up your freaking eyes, not everybody can afford a good education, its not their fault. Imagine if your parents couldn't afford to send you to collage/school,but your friend got in because a stranger knew her dog was shot, you would be mad. People cant always help not affording to go collage.

As a follower of Jesus the Christ, I am called to care for widows an orphans and to provide for the poor. I give between 10 and 15% of my income to Christian charity. Locally, I do what I can. YBIC

It's a biblical obligation. At the same time, one must not allow himself to become destitute helping the poor or giving to charity.
