Scottish and Newcastle was actually formed by the merger of two companies in April 1960 (Scottish Brewers and Newcastle Breweries).

They can, however, trace their roots back to the foundation of the William Younder Brewery in Leith in 1749.

Scottish & Newcastle is the only British owned multinational brewer. They expanded considerably when they purchased Courage Breweries in 1995 (who had themselves swallowed Watneys breweries previously) They now have substantial holdings abroad as well. Their name is now a little inacurate since they no longer brew in Scotland (they have closed the Youngers brewery in Edinburgh) and their only brewery in Tyneside is not now in Newcastle but is the former Federation brewery at Gateshead. In Britain, apart from Gateshead, they also brew at John Smiths at Tadcaster (this came with the Courage empire) and at giant keg/lager only factories at Reading and Manchester. Like other multinationals they have little interest in quality and just churn out vast quantities of heavily promoted bland 'brands'. Not a very inspiring outfit really....
