They'll give you enough drugs you won't feel a thing and won't care what they are doing to you.

For the colonoscopy, you will lie on your left side on the examining table. You will be given pain medication and a moderate sedative to keep you comfortable and help you relax during the exam. The doctor and a nurse will monitor your vital signs, look for any signs of discomfort, and make adjustments as needed.
The doctor will then insert a long, flexible, lighted tube into your rectum and slowly guide it into your colon. The tube is called a colonoscope (koh-LON-oh-skope). The scope transmits an image of the inside of the colon onto a video screen so the doctor can carefully examine the lining of the colon. The scope bends so the doctor can move it around the curves of your colon.
You may be asked to change positions at times so the doctor can more easily move the scope to better see the different parts of your colon. The scope blows air into your colon and inflates it, which helps give the doctor a better view. Most patients do not remember the procedure afterwards.
During the procedure you may feel mild cramping. You can reduce the cramping by taking several slow, deep breaths. When the doctor has finished, the colonoscope is slowly withdrawn while the lining of your bowel is carefully examined.
A colonoscopy usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. The sedative and pain medicine should keep you from feeling much discomfort during the exam. You may feel some cramping or the sensation of having gas after the procedure is completed, but it usually stops within an hour.
Rarely, some people experience severe abdominal pain, fever, bloody bowel movements, dizziness, or weakness afterward. Full recovery by the next day is normal and expected and you may return to your regular activities.

I have had a colonoscopy and a colon resection. For the colonoscopy, the prep (as people said) is the worst part. I was asleep the whole time and felt no discomfort after except for gas. The gas comes from the CO2 they insert into your colon in order to view it better. As for the colon resection, it was about 1000 times worse so don't fear the colonoscopy. Be safe and have them. I am going for my 2nd on Feb. 9th which will make my 3rd prep in a year. And I dread the prep again too. But, I will not drink the 4 liters of Go Lyte again. I do Fleets PhosphaSoda. Does the trick the same as the other in 1.7 fl. oz. vs. 4 liters. Talk to your doctor if you cannot do that awful liquid. To me, it saved my life at 28.

The Worst thing to do is to be scared or any emotion that stirs up the digestive tract such as stress.
Then try to divert all your thoughts to other things like work or the future or your best fantasy. It works. This procedre will not hurt. It only feels weird. The camera is smaller than ever at most MD's
Just try not to worry. The results are worse if you are in bad shape.

I had my first colonoscopy last June. The most embarrassing part was putting on the silly gown. They used 'twilight' anaesthesia and I don't remember a thing about the actual procedure.
Personally, I found it no more embarrassing than getting my teeth cleaned.

I have had 2 colonoscopies. The first one, in 1987 was done under local anesthesia and it did hurt. The second one was done in 2006 and I was under general anesthesia (I was fully under.) Since I was fully under, it did not hurt at all during the procedure. Ask your doctor what kind of anesthesia you will be under.

This procedure is an everyday procedure that is necessary fro preventative care over 40. You are put into twilight during the procedure and feel nothing...you must have someone to drive you home to rest since you do get anesthesia.....plan on a restful day off!!!! Relax....

i've never had one. BUT my mom just did -- and to put your fears aside -- she is the type that really worries about this sort of thing...
she said it wasn't anything to be worried about. sure, it's not something you want to have done -- but it's good to get things checked out and get it over with until the next time you need it done. she said there was minimal pressure and everyone was very discreet -- it's nothing they haven't seen before.

Make sure to bring a watch. Cuz after they are thru and you go to the bathroom (to epel the air) you can time yourself on the longest fart you will ever do. I think mine lasted 50 seconds. But being I had to not eat nothing the day before, mine was all bark and no bite. lol Nurses get to see your rear end when they stick it up you.
