My son is unhappy at his current school and we are thinking about homeschooling as a option. I have no idea where to start or what to do. If you could please give me your ideas it would be much appreciated.

You don't mention what grade your son is in. The longer a child has been in public school environment, the longer it may take to adjust to a home school environment. The big thing to remember is, you don't want to replicate school at home. Usually homeschoolers take no more than 3 hours to do what a school does in 6. This can be 1-2 hours a day for early elementary kids.
Let your child have as much say as possible in curriculum decisions. For example, you may want to stay with your state's scope and sequence for Language Arts and Math but the sky is the limit for social studies or science! If your child has a passion for something like whales or pyramids, this is a good time to let his interests guide what you study for these two subjects.
Give him lots of down time initially to recuperate from public school before gradually introducing more structure. Personally, I would turn off or strictly limit TV and video games and let him get bored enough to start turning to books or drawing or models or other creative endeavors that might have got lost in the time squeeze of public school. Homeschooling can be great for awakening a love of reading, playing and creativity, but it is difficult to compete with TV so less is better.
Brainstorm with him a list of fieldtrips he would like to go on and things you could study that center around them. Ask your city librarian if she can put you in touch with a homeschool groups(librarians usually know). Many homeschool groups have classes and special events that he might be interested in. Take him to a bookstore and give him some money to buy some books of his choice to read while you are gathering more information about homeschooling. Then in the meantime, read, read read about homeschooling. Cathy Duffy's Top Ten Curriculm Picks is great for finding out what's out there for resources. Concentrate initially on Language Arts and Math and once you have settled on that, you can start exploring resources for Science and Social Studies. Don't be afraid to switch, modify or only loosely use the curriculum you end up with. Be flexible with it and use it as a guide- don't let it be your master.
Good luck to you!--

You need to find out how to legally remove your son from school. Then do it.

When I took my daughter out of public school,
I used materials purchased from the Backpack.com. They have used text books and curricula for whatever you needs maybe.
Good luck with your son.

My daughter continued to take the standardized tests. She went three grades ahead in math in one year.
