This is my first time going to gym.
I did 3 sets of 10 sit ups with an ab Roller. I also did 2 sets of 7 with this machine (I put 20 lbs of weight in the machine)http://www.exerciseandnutritionthetruth.com/img/abmachine.gif
I relaxed after each set but when i woke up this morning my muscle stomach upper area hurts. Should I continue doing this? I plan to loose 10-20 pounds by going to they gym 5 times/week. I'm 5'4 and 150 lbs. I also used the treadmill for an hour by alternating walking and running. I did sweat a lot and it felt good.
I'm thinking since I'm a newbie I should do less of stomach work outs, and do more in the future.

Good Job! Continue but remember to at first do these exercises every other day. If you go full force everyday with the stomach thing, I think you may injure yourself.

The pain is because of lactic acid building up in your muscles, just keep at it. I do sit ups every morning and it doesn't hurt at all. It hurt for the first 2-3 days when I started out but now it doesn't hurt at all, just work through it and your body will adjust itself I guess...just don't over-do it too much coz it'll do more harm than good. Keep up a decent level that you can physically cope with, maybe if you took the exercise down a bit for a little while and build it up day by day it'd be easier for you.
With work-outs muscle memory generally lasts for 48 hours so make sure you work out at least every other day. :)

cute

any muscle that you normally do not exercise, and then suddenly start exercising, will hurt the next day. It's called muscle sore.

you can get those from doing too many repetitions of about anything, including playing tennis, walking or running for too long when untrained, trying a new sport / art, you name it.

three sets of 10 plus 2 sets of 7 seems like too much to do at once. It's better to start more progressively (say, 2 sets of 10 if you're out of shape), and give your muscles at least one and maybe even 2 days of rest in between at first.

if your goal is to get in better shape over time, then rushing it, causing pain, and potentially discouraging you on the spot, is NOT the way to go.

Rest in between days of sit ups. When your chest hurts, or your abs, the acid is moving to muscles never used before. Start out with doing this 3 days a wk and gradually build up to at least 5.

when your muscles get stronger, it is because there are slight tears in the fibers. This is actually a good thing. Your muscle will rebuild itself and slowing become bigger. (hence the term "going to the gym to get ripped.) Also another reason you could be sore during the initial excersize itself would be a build up of lactic acid. This is the same sensation you get when running and you have a stitch in your side. The only thing you can do to help this is to make sure you are breathing properly when doing the sit ups and make sure to drink lots of water after you workout.

it'll go away in a day or two. unless it's major pain, that's just what happens when you work your muscles. It's ok if you're a little sore the next day. you might even learn to like the feeling - since it means you got a good workout.

I think that you may injure yourself since you havn't worked out and then started as if you had been working out 5 times a week prior to this. I suggest you start off slow then progressively move up and add more weights and more repetitions each week.

Yes, you can continue, but for the moment take it easier. Put less weight at the machine, do many but without much pressure. You must sweat and get tired, but not "suffer" while you exercise. And sdon't forget to do some warm up and stretches before and after.

Your stomach wasnt used to you working out. So you shocked them. Eventually the pain wont be there anymore. Its a good thing! Keep going!
