While that's a literal translation, Italian uses "si chiamare" (to call onself) for people's names. So you would say:

La mia madre si chiama Lidia (my mother's name is Lydia).

And for yourself, you'd say "mi chiamo Giovanni" (my name is John).

The pronoun si (or mi, ti, etc.) makes this a so-called reflexive verb, because it "bends back" on the subject of the sentence. French and Spanish, for example, also use reflexive verbs with exactly the same structure for "to call oneself" -- "je m'apelle Claude" for "my name is/I call myself Claude," and "me llamo Juan Manuel" for "my name is/I call myself Juan Manuel".
