Well, they say that Americans will fall for anything.... ;)
Seriously, America is fairly insular. The country started getting highly Christianized during the Cold War, when they started stamping "In God We Trust" on everything and putting "Under God" in the pledge of allegiance. Fear of nuclear war will do that to you, I guess.
It's just been getting worse again now that everyone is afraid of Muslim fundamentalists.

It is actually huge in many countries, just not the middle east and africa. I think percentage wise you would find greater populations of Christians in some European countries and also many Latin countries. The reason it is not big where it originated is they same reason those people crucified Jesus, because they thought he was a false Messiah. I would expect a religion based on someone who a specific community thinks was a fraud wouldn't really fly there. This being said, they do believe many of the same things and it is really only the New Testament that seperates them. At some point, this will all be smoothed out.

Although Christianity originated in the Middle East, it spread out rapidly to most European countries, thanks to the work of Paul and the early Apostles. However, the early Church became corrupted by false doctrines, and later the Roman Catholic Church took over and demanded allegiance from all countries. At the same time, it persecuted those who stuck fast to Scripture, since the Catholic Church believes that the Pope supercedes all Scripture. Because the light of the Bible was heavily censored during the Dark Ages, people lived in misery under Papal Rome, until the New World was discovered and those who worshipped God according to Scripture could now find a refuge beyond the long arm of the Papacy. America thus flourished and prospered, while the Old World stagnated. This country has been an experiment of sorts to see what would happen if the state and church were separated, which was not the case in Europe. Today, most churches in America are Protestant and there are many denominations, which attest to our Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion. Although Catholics still exist in America, they are no longer allowed to burn us at the stake and persecute us.
Europe today is spiritually stagnant and atheistic, while America, despite its crime and increasing immorality, is still basically a Bible-believing Christian country at its roots. Christianity is so big in the US (compared to other countries) because when people are allowed to believe what they want, in many cases they will assume the religion of their parents, or else the one that rings most true to them.

Christians have a tendency to flee before the muslim sword. Two modern day examples: 1. Lebanon, a predominantly christian country, and considered the 'Riviera' of the middle east, up until the civil war that started in teh 1970's. since then, most christians have left for been killed by muslims. 2. Bethlehem: An almost entirely christian city until the 1993 Oslo accords gave control of the city to the palestinians. since then, ALL the christians have fled except for a small group that maintains the christian holy sites in the city, especially the church of the nativity, which was almost destroyed several years ago by palestinian terrorists.

Christianity is huge in Italy (ROMAN soil), Greece, Macedonia, Croatia and very prominent in Turkey, Lebanon, but it is oppressed in Arab and PErsian areas due to the Islamic states which tax and make it a death penalty issue to practise in public or actively convert Islamics to Christianity. If it weren't for Islam, Christianity would be quite large in the Middle East.
Now, if AMERICA were to be a Christian Nation, Islam would have problems here, but were not so we let their people swear in on a Quran
Try using a Bible in an Islamic Assembly. First of all, you can't get voted in unless you're Islamic!

Our founding Fathers came here for religious freedom. Since they were Christian it became the prominent faith based religion in the US. But how many people in the US really meet the requirements of being a Christian?

Read several history books....... sorry but anything less would be rather incomplete.
Edit:
ok I'll try a little....
Start with the adoption of Christianity by various tribes in the Middle East, follow it through the Roman Empire thence throughout Europe. Add in the migration of several thousand non-conformists to the New World, go through the European Enlightenment, add in the conquest of South America by catholic Spain and fast forward to the immigration of Hispanics.
While we are about, look at the rise of Islam, their conquest and expansion through Arabia and into Europe, the following holy wars........
Its a big subject.

Christianity is big in the U.S because this country was founded on Judeo-Christian values. another reason is because God's plan was to do as follows:
1. Tell the Jews
2. Tell the gentiles
3. Tell the leftover Jews.
We are in the tell the Gentile era, but the first answer sums it up nicely.

All religions go in cycles in areas, and on a larger scale with the religion itself. Christianity is in on the late-side of its lifespan. There were many religions before Christianity and there will be many more after it fades.
