The FBI investigates over 300 classifications of crime. Kidnapping applies wherein there is known interstate movement, surprisingly, unless violence or interstate transport occurs they don't do parental kidnappings. Most classifications have to do with interstate involvement and they still investigate all bank robberies as banks are FDIC insured. They do NOT however take care of counterfeiting offenses (that is done by US Secret Service). The FBI is under the jurisdiction of the U. S. Attorney General (Department of Justice). Obviously their classification numbers have increased due to terrorism, although terrorism (both international & domestic) have always been under their pervue. In the cases of terrorism, the FBI is the lead agency. Hate Crimes are also a biggie as are Discrimination in Housing or any racially motivated crimes. Copyrighting (as you see on the begining of a film, dvd, are also investigated by the FBI. So, hopefully I've answered to the BEST of your question, but I can't list 300 +. Although someone before me answered crimes in the U.S., the FBI maintains approximately 30 or so Foreign Legal Attache offices as well as the 56 or so U.S. field offices (each of which has satellite offices).

Crimes committed within the United States are all technically under the jurisdiction of the FBI, however, the FBI is usually only involved with the most heinous crimes or crimes that involve offenses in more than one state (especially those involving racketeering/organized crime).

Crimes that occur across state lines are under the FBI's jurisdiction, such as computer hacking. Also any larger crimes that require investigation, such as drug and weapons tracking are the domain of the FBI.

Federal law enforcement agencies only have authority to enforce federal laws. The secret service handles offenses involving counterfeiting and most threats against high level politicians..ie the ones they generally guard. The ATF handles offenses involving alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. Ther DEA handles drugs and the FBI does pretty much everything else...bank robberies,kidnapping/abductions,and other crimes involving interstate travel like hijackings, serial killers, terrorist groups within the US,etc.

For one example is RICO which stands for Racketeering, Influencing Corrupt Organizations, just think Italian families/organized crime. If you look up RICO, you should be able to find so MANY Other federal law violations that fall under that statute it's ridiculous, look up THE PATRIOT ACT, those are two examples to start with, enjoy, it will be fun, go onto department of defense website, or FBI website, start fishing around, you'll resource lots of info

Crimes which are federal in nature. This includes kidnapping, bank robbery, terrorism, flight across state lines to avoid prosecution, crimes commited on U.S. govt. property, crimes committed against fed. employee while on duty, pirating video cd's, etc. The list goes on, but you get the idea.

Federal crimes, obviously. But, truth be known, they spend alot more money and manpower chasing down drug offenders than they do on pedophiles that have kidnapped children and taken them across state lines because the Republicans and Democrats want to ``send the 'right' message to young people.'' Yeah, RIGHT!
``God bless America?'' WTF? Does anybody ACTUALLY believe the Almighty would bless an evil and UNHOLY union of quasi-totalitarian POLICE STATES?
