Ok here's the deal- You can only draw a monthly check if you are disabled, or you are retired from the military. The reason that they say that veterans don't get enough money is because they don't, and they are often penalized for going to work. Say that you retire after 20 years in the military. So now you are drawing a check every month but it's really not enough to live on (you might be only 40 years old) You decide that you want to get a federal job (civilian sector) because you are highly qualified, and familiar with the system. Guess what- you can kiss your retirement goodbye.
Also, many disabled veterans are unable to get healthcare through the VA, because there are not enough doctors and services available, or they are too far away. The VA does the best that they can, but it can only stretch so far.
As far as your friend being a bartender- a lot of veterans take low-stress, low responsibility jobs for a while because they need a break from the rigorous schedule and discipline required in the military.

I don't get any money because I do not have a disability but I do get health care and that is a big plus. There are services that I don't get like eye glasses and dental care. Politicians don't think we don't need to see or eat properly so they cut the VA funds and offer those services to a few. They say those services have to be combat rated.

Remember this....The USA Government will promise you alot before you go into the military. After you are out you get very little and what little you get you have to fight for it days on end. That's the way it is and that is the way it will always be. We ( Veterans ) just get used to it.

They get money on disablility, or on retirement, for life. But now where would the money come from. Will you pay more taxes to make sure they have money? That is where it comes from, if we tax Ford, or G.M or Microsoft more, they pass it on to us. If yu are willing to give more money in taxes and you can convince everyone else to you may have a good idea there.

They do not make nearly enough, whatever it is.
I would support raising taxes for this one purpose: to make sure EVERY PENNY of the increase (and then some) rasied veterans' benefits.

Because the liberals/Democrats hate us, so they keep minimizing our cost-of-living (COL) increases on our pensions.
We get smaller COL adjustments to our retirement money than drug addicts on welfare.
