Metal tongue bars make small fractures in the teeth and cause more cavities and work in the long run, than otherwise.

It also kills taste buds...from what I understand, permanently.

I had my tongue pierced when I was 18 (7 years ago). In the long run, yes it can affect you. Mine got infected once when I didn't sterilize the new barbell well enough, and it hurt. Your tongue will swell up badly and eating is very hard. I've heard of some cases where the infection got so bad they've had to be put on antibiotics. I just had to clean mine constantly. It's not something I'm against, obviously since I did it, but you have to take good care of it. I did chip a few of my teeth. My best advice is to get the plastic balls instead of the metal to help prevent chipping teeth. I've had mine out for about a year now. It hasn't completely closed up, but i think I'm one of the rare cases. I've known people to take it out for a week and it closed up. There's also the chance of swallowing it..which I've also done.

I've read on here where people say to rinse with Listerine. Don't do that. The alcohol in it burns your tongue. I had mine done professionally...which is a must...and they gave me Biotene. It contains no alcohol and is painless. There is the chance to damage the nerves in your tongue. If they pierce it from the bottom there's less of a chance of damage.

Here is the deal with piercing your tongue. There are muscles in your tongue and the piercer will pierce between them (hopefully) It is the least painful and it heals quickly, however the flipside to that is that having a tongue piercing can damage your teeth (costly) and also if the piercer makes a mistake it could do serious damage. It will close up once the piercing is removed and of course there is always a chance of infection. If the infection is bad enough it can affect your whole body and make you very sick. Of course, lots of people everyday do it and are fine. Its just your decision. I personally would say no.

Mouth piercings can be tricky because of the sheer number of bacteria in the oral cavity. Scrupulous hygiene is essential! You'll probably have a lisp until you adjust to the jewelry and it will be painful until it heals. The tongue piercing won't close immediately if that's what concerns you. People who have them may remove the stud for work and replace it when at home.

And anyone who tells you that your piercing won't get infected is wrong. They are in no position to predict an outcome for you. Go to the website suggested by "the only" and ask a doctor about possible adverse effects and complications.

My daughter got her tongue pierced a few years ago, yes it can get infected so take care of it. The biggest drawback my daughter has had is chipped teeth from wearing stainless steel so I would recommend plastic, she swithed to plastic tongue rings and they don't seem to chip her teeth. Some parts of her speech is affected sometimes, leaving it out will cause the hole to grow up since the mouth is very fast healing, my daughter cannot leave hers out for very long at a time, Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Tongue piercings (and any tongue injuries) heal up VERY quickly, so you can't leave it out for long. It is possible that it could mess with your teeth, but this would be an exception to the norm. It doesn't hurt and it heals quickly and easily. It is important to rinse with Listerine when you first get it to avoid infection, but I have never heard of someone getting an infection.

Of course it's a bad thing to do. You are piercing a bar through a sensitive part of your body. Do your research.

"Tongue piercing: a fad with serious dental and physical consequences

People who undergo body piercing may consider it a form of body art and self-expression, no different from wearing earrings. But piercing on and around the mouth can cause damage to the teeth and mouth tissues, according to Diana Ram and Benjamin Peretz in the Journal of Dentistry for Children.

Dentists are often the first to note any harmful effects

Dentists who treat teenagers are becoming accustomed to seeing more patients with jewelry inside and around the mouth, the article notes. Most mouth jewelry takes the form of removable studs, hoops or barbell-shaped devices that are purchased commercially. Dentists are often the first to note any harmful effects resulting from the piercing process or the jewelry itself, such as fractures or cracks in the tooth structures caused by a metallic barbell stud. Additional negative effects include:

pain
post-placement swelling
prolonged bleeding
gum injury
permanent numbness
loss of taste
oral hygiene problems
In addition, piercing has been identified by the National Institutes of Health as a possible vehicle for transmission of hepatitis B, C, D and G, and HIV."

Infection is very rare. Swish salt water in your mouth after every time you eat or drink, for at least a month. mine will close up if i take it out, I've tried. There would be a little scar tissue but that's it. There are also chances of breaking teeth when you chew, or if you chew on your piercing like i do , there's always the chance of tearing it out accidentally. But go for it, and be careful.

if you don't mind ruining your teeth, infections since the tongue is in a warm moist area, it is more prone to infections. Not to mention the fact that you will sound retarded trying to talk with it for a long time.

Watch the movie Rat Race and watch the guy with the tongue ring and make up your mind then.

I had my tongue pierced 10 years ago with a double 0 gauge ring..
The only negative thing is that i feel that i lost some taste in my tongue and also hot (Temp.) foods are really hot when to others it's not as hot.
The hole will close and it won't get infected.

I've had my tongue pierced three times. I've never had a problem with it. As long as you keep it clean with Listerine you should be fine. As for it closing since its in your mouth it should close within a couple of days. You should be fine if you get it professionally pierced.
