If the paint is an oil base you can add a little PINE SOL to the paint. the Pine sol emulsifies the oil base without actually thinning the paint. Water base shouldn't be thinned.However, if it's just to thick,you can thin it with water.Not too much.You wont get as good of coverage & will have to use more coats.

Well using thick paint is the problem, for bad walls the best thing to do is skim it or paper it. Plain white then you can paint that.
I assume you are using a roller and not a brush.

you can thin the paint down with water if it is not oil based and give it an extra coat.
ideally you should have used a lining paper first you could then just use a normal emulsion
