Purdue University man, Boiler UP!

Purdue will give you an amazing education, and will also allow you to still experience college life as its supposed to be (as long as you know how to budget your time right). I recently graduated from aerospace engineering at Purdue, and I have to tell you, you'd be hard pressed to find a better education or a better place to live.

Of course, Cal Tech and MIT are amazing colleges as well, however, you can get just as far, if not farther, with a degree from Purdue. Engineers that graduate from Purdue are very balanced. They have both analytical and problem solving abilities as well as having great interpersonal skills. It used to be that all that was important for an engineer is to be great at the maths and sciences. Interpersonal skills are now just as important as those attributes. And that is something you get at Purdue, but not as much at other "better" colleges.

Something you'll find about the graduates of the MIT's and Cal Tech's of the world, is that they are chosen for the lab and R&D jobs. These are great if that fits your personality. But for the most part the R&D engineers don't get much farther along than R&D. If you want to branch into project management, administration, or become a chief engineer... these things require a lot of personality and teamworking skills.

Purdue constantly ranks in the top 5 engineering schools in the country, and trust me, I had friends at both MIT and Cal Tech... you'll have a hell of a lot more fun there.

I went to Waterloo and it is a good school if you know what you want to do. Some of the teaching is downright horrible, so know what you're there for. The co-op program is good, but generates competition between classmates. IMO there are better schools to go to if you want to pursue graduate studies, notably Toronto and McGill. Queen's and Western are good party schools. Toronto has a program called Engineering Science that is top rate and would rank with other top engineering schools in the world.

Top engineering schools US are listed below. Definitely MIT is #1. US schools are better for graduate studies because there is more money available.

MIT is extremely difficult to get in, and is generally regarded as very rigorous once you get in. You should be able to google the above names to get the websites.

If you want a top-notch engineering eduction from a smaller school with a friendly environment then you can't beat Clarkson University in upstate NY. Let's go tech!!!

By the way, MIT undergrad is not all that it is cracked up to be... just my 2 cents.

University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario (about 1.25 hrs from Toronto), Canada. They invented the 'co-op' program where you study one semester and intern in a real engineerning job the next. You end up leaving the program with 2 yrs real world experience, and 2 or 3 companies who already know you so its easy to get a job.

Ok, I have to throw in my 2 cents.....

If you already have a pretty good idea of what you want to do in engineering, then yes CalTech or MIT (assuming that you can get in).

If you aren't really sure, esp. if you aren't really sure that you even want to do engineering for the rest of your lives on this planet, then I would also consider....

Harvey Mudd College

(Look it up. It's a real college!)

School ratings are overrated. It all comes down to how hard you are willing to work.

I sit on hiring interview panels. The school that the person went to has nothing to do with how well they do in the interview.
