Anything, at all? I'm about to have a baby and I'm totally wanting my best friend to stay with me for a few days, but I have a cat (mostly outside) who I don't even really mind leaving outside, but she's allergic. Is there anything I can do to at least make her stay more comfortable for her? Even if she has to get a hotel room at night, I still don't want her to be miserable during the day while she's visiting. Any suggestions?

I would suggest steam cleaning actually because depending on the vacuum you have you might just spit all the dander back out into the air. If you have one handy that would help. They have this pet formula by bissel for allergies that seems to help me a lot. Also make sure to wash all the sheets and pillows and blankets she may use, and dust really well (places you don't normally dust :o) ) and she should be fine. I have a cat and I'm allergic too but seem to keep my symptoms at bay by vacuuming/steam cleaning and washing/dusting a lot. Also benadryl handy would be nice just in case it's still in the air when she comes over depending how bad she is allergic.

My adult son has developed allergies to cats since he grew and left home despite the fact that he lived with them all his growing up years.

We live rurally and besides possums and fox, we have coyotes. The predators will kill and eat housecats given the opportunity, so our pets stay indoors. You may have the same limitations. Also, some breed are very rare and can be the target of thieves.

My position is simple. My son is coming to visit in MY house. If he wants to be comfortable, he takes an antihistamine a few hours BEFORE he comes over. I suggest that your guests be told the same thing.

It sounds cold-hearted, but if I've cleaned the day before then I expect my son to do his part, as well. This is, after all, YOUR home. If your guest is not willing to meet you halfway, then a visit in a public, cat-free environment might be the answer. Judith

Cat dander is extremely "sticky". It gets on everything. If you can keep the cat out before she comes and while she is there, that will help. Be sure to vacuum, steam clean, wash all linens (including curtains and bedding). If you have an air purifier, that helps a lot. It might also help if your friend could bring an allergy medication with her, such as Claritin, in case she does have symptoms. Congratulations and good luck!

Drew hit it on the head. However, if she's as allergic as I am, the only way to do it is to deep clean everything and have the ventilation system professionally cleaned. You'd be surprised how much cat dander will get into the duct work. That way, the central heat and air won't spread it around again after you've cleaned.

These are all good, but make sure you do the cleaning the day prior to her arrival and keep the cat out afterwards. Cleaning the day of can stir up the dust even worse, I've seen it happen on some of my friends. I would clean before they got there and they would still react.

I am very allergic to cats. Vacuum the carpet well, vacuum the sofa and chairs and have fresh linens on the bed. Also, do not hold the cat just before she comes, unless you change clothes first.

if you're planning on keeping the cat outside while she's visiting put the cat outside a day before she gets there and make sure to vacuum everything. carpet, couches, bare floors. just try to get everything freshly cleaned and have her make sure she has her allergy meds with her.

Clean the house, vacumn everything and use some allergen reducer, like Frebreez. Its not fabulous but it helps. If that's not enough, keep some allergy medication around for her.
