Great little dogs, if you find a reputable breeder!
the easist way to find the reputable breeder, is to find one that asks YOU more questions than you can ask them..and one that insists on a home visit..

How would we know? If you use a reputable breeder and know how to be a responsible owner, then sure, go for it. http://dogplay.com/GettingDog/index.html
Yorkies are great dogs, but they are high maintenence. They are prone to separation anxiety, meaning that you shouldn't really leave them alone for more than 4 hours regularly - for their entire life, which can be 15 years.
Yorkies are toy dogs, so they are prone to toy breed injuries like luxating patellas and leg breaks. One of these events can easily cost $1000 to fix.
Yorkies need regular grooming, so trips to the groomers every month or two are usually recommended for pet quality (non-showing) Yorkies.
Yorkies are Terriers, so they can be protective and mouthy. If you every have anyone in your life that's not animal smart, a Yorkie can be a bad mix.
Because of their size, things that wouldn't be toxic to a lab can kill a Yorkie in minutes. A vet trip to counteract the Easter Chocolate or the Bug Spray could also run you $1000+, and the dog may not even survive. You have to plan for that $1000, not just cross that bridge when you get to it.
As with most toy breeds, Yorkies can be somewhat difficult to housebreak. Yorkies are better at it than say Chis, but if you get a stubborn one, your entire house may become a Yorkie Toilet. If that's a problem, or if you dont have the time to spend 6 months housebreaking, then a Yorkie would be a TERRIBLE choice.
Yorkies are yappy. If you live in an apartment or near 'sensitive' neighbors, they aren't a viable choice.
They are fun dogs, but they are a load of responsibility. They should NEVER be gotten just because they are cute or because they fit in your purse. They are toy terriers - something that not everyone can handle. Good luck to you in your search. : )

Get a small dog mix like yorkie poodle or maltese-yourkie etc. Less chance of genetic inbred problems which can be expensive. Yorkies are very expensive too $1500 or so. Mixes would be less unless its a fancy designer mix. I have 3 small dogs and they dont yap like most people mythologise about. Small dogs are better watchdogs too than big dogs. More alert and liable to bark scaring away intruders. Chetco's answer is good. Get reputable breeder! Very hard to find small young dogs at the shelter.

I have a yorkshire terrier and he is about 8 years old. They are very hyper dogs when they are younger but now he is more slow moving as he gets older.
He absolutely hates being outside. He barks nonstop ( it is a high pitched bark) to come inside almost minutes after letting him out.
When he was little, we had a problem with barking nonstop but we fixed that with a barking collar. It was one that sent a high pitched noise into his ear when he barked and he learned quickly to stop barking.
He was a very fast learner with tricks such as shake, sit, etc. Took him maybe an hour or so and he had it all down.
He does have seperation anxiety. My daughter goes outside to play and he will sit in the window and whine the entire time until she comes home. This can get extremely aggraviting to listen to.
I have my yorkie's hair cut short because it is very time consuming each day to keep it tangle free. They require a lot of grooming.
Hopefully this helps your decision.

If you can afford their up-keep and have done extensive research on their temperament. This isn't a breed of dog for everyone...

Well, sure, let me go with you to the lingerie shop next door and let's sample a few. I think you're avatar would look sexy in a girly way if you wore purplish lingerie.
