God this seems strange asking this. Basically i'm a 25 year old guy with fairly curly hair (which i'm not overly happy with), however i want something that is low maintenance as i currently use straighteners each day rather than using loads of gel or wax. It's fairly long considering, however i'm going to go for a consult after a lot of pressure from work colleagues.
I think i have a phobia of hairdressers which obviously doesn't help, and the thought of it scares me to death even though i've heard on consults you don't have to get the hair cut there and then. Now i've always had my parents or neighbour cut it (trim it basically) and don't have a clue what i should be asking for or what they would suggest for my type of hair. I don't even know what i should ask for. Do i go in with my hair washed? unstraighten? Unstraightened and washed it looks like a bloody mess! So would rather go with it straighened and tell them (If i gain the bottle!). What do people suggest i do?

Thanks for the quick advice.
Straightening has definately weakened my hair i think, might have made it thiner too? I think the other thing that scares me is the fact i know it looks a right state without anything going with it so i think i have the huge embarrasement factor. Not sure about a buzz cut? Is that what alot of the lads in the army have? If so i don't think that would suit me, although the thought of having no hassle in the mornings or before going out sounds a dream.
I don't know how to describe it but what about a short cut which looks a little messy but spiked in places? I've always wondered what it would look like on me as that seem what most people have. I have a what i describe as a round head, but not like a football/soccer ball.

I have a Toni&Guy near me, any good? Seems very female orientated but some of the lads from work go there so must be Unisex. Ugh, all these thought are making me nervous. :(

I'll go with my hair washed and wear a cap! Not sure if that helps, but i wear caps alot, mainly because then on the weekends i can not bother with it, wash it each day and leave it.

Go with your hair washed and dried in it's natural state so the hair dresser can evaluate it. He/she should wash it again before cutting it.
As for looking for a hair salon or barber shop - ask friends and acquaintances who have nice hair cuts for recommendations. If possible, scope out the perspective salon on a Saturday and see if you like the vibe. If you do, ask to book a consultation and then book a hair cut later. If not, but you still feel okay - go ahead and book an appointment.
Stick with established, local barber shops and salons rather than chains. They have lower turnover and really want to keep their client list full. If you are happy with a particular person, stay with them to develop a rapport.
As for hair cuts - go to www.matrix.com. They have hair cuts & tips for men. Look at GQ - it's an excellent resource for ideas and fashion tips.

Have you seen any pics of people's hair that you would like?
Some photos would help the stylist out, even if they are not exactly what you want it is something to comment on and will help you explain. Don't be scared to tell the stylist what you want - low maintenance and natural.
You might want to think about whether you will want to straighten every now and again for a change after it has been cut and how this will look with the style.
When you turn up you should definitely have clean hair, even if your hairdresser wants to wash it again it should still be clean when you arrive. I would advise you to leave it natural and curly as he will then see its full glory and can make a better assessment, you want the best end result after all.
If you are really embarrassed wear a hat to the appointment.

Yeah, I'd say stick with your curls...people pay good money to get what you have naturally. With a little shaping, that 'bloody mess' could be DAMN sexy..
If it's long, get a little off at a time...you can always take more off, but hard to put back on. Unless you're sure you wanna try a shorter style, in which case, jump on it.
Look through some magazines to find a hairstyle that you think you'd like. Your stylist should also know what sort of cut will best accentuate your facial features, and will give you recommendations.

My husband has extremely curly hair or maybe as he washes it it truly is going to grow to be a brilliant boufont! He too hates the hairdressers so I honestly could cut back his as quick as humanly achieveable. i personally imagine curly hair on a guy is large, extremely you've no longer some thing to be nerve-racking about with the hairdressers. attempt to come across a %in a mag of a haircut you want and take that with you, if uncertain get the lower back and aspects reduce extremely short yet go away some length on accurate that you'll be able to positioned a wax on (black and white is sweet) and mess it up somewhat. on the end of the day its your hair and also you may do inspite of you pick with it!

you can bring in a picture of another persons hair you admirer, like from a magazine or something. if you are going to wear your hair straightened after you get it cit then wear it straightened when you get it cut, so you know how it'll look, same with curled. If you want it to be curled tell the hairdresser that you want it to be easy to maintain and she should give you some great ideas. It wouldnt hurt to tell her it was your first time getting your haircut either. It will make a great story for her and she'll make it more relaxing for you.
Good luck!

Hair straightening is one of the worst things you can do. It damages your air. Its like perming or double process blonde but its even worse.
If you want easy and low maintenance, do a buzz cut. or just something real short. You will love the small amount of time in the shower and getting ready as well as you use very little shampoo.
Regardless of what you do, hair grows back. Dont worry about it, there are too many important things to worry about. Find something you like, or just go with the stylists suggestion and just GO FOR IT!!
Even if you hate it, it'll grow back in no time.

of course you have to have clean hair. do not straighten, let them see exactly what their dealing with, what you need is some long layers and it should soften the curl and just look sexy. don't kid yourself women love a guy with curly hair, they should be able to tell you what product to use to soften it up. good luck
