If you mean for firewood, a wdge and hammer works really well...also, the wdge pole that has a throw weight at the top is good...If you want something that runs on gas, there's a commercial log splitter that drives a wedge into a log from a horizontal position... Does that help?

Use a wood-splitting axe to do the job. Unlike ordinary axes these have wedges that spring out to prevent the axe from getting stuck in the wood.
