Where do you draw the line?

interesting question.
technically you " steal" what doesn't belong to you. so if it is lying on the ground it belongs to no one.
now, if it's a small amount ( by your standards) you casually take it as it will not change your life therefore neither the person who lost it will be affected.
But, if it is a considerable amount ( again by your standard) it will affect your life (even on a small scale) therefore you decide that someone else was deprived from it and this is when your conscience hits panic button and you go from casually putting it in your pocket to : " My god, should I keep it" mode.
it's your line and no one can draw it for you, all I can do is lend you my piece of chalk.

One dollar no ten dollars no 100 or more I would stay around and see if someone comes by looking as though they are looking for something I would not be obvious then I would ask if they lost something and if they respond yes and it is the am mount I found I would give it back. My stand around limit is 20 to 30 min. I would hope some one would do the same for me I work hard for my money.

Techinically it would be stealing, however if somebody loses 1, or 10 dollars, they are not going to report it so you do not have to worry about it. They would report 100 or 1000 dollars, so you need to turn that in to the police because the person would turn it in.

Well I guess there is a line that should be drawn..
$1.00 found on the street, you keep, maybe even $10.00.
But depending on where you found the $100.00 would determine what you do with it. If you found it in the middle of street, then I would say keep it, if you found it in a retail establishment, I would say turn it in, they will hang onto it for 30 days, if no one claims it they should turn it over to you... That is unless you work for Barnes & Noble Booksellers..
I found $300.00 in a Barnes & Noble (where I worked), turned it in and waited the 30 required days.. no one claimed it, but the management staff had helped their selves to it and all that was left was $45.00 - I call that stealing.
The same would apply to $1000.00 or more.
Honesty is always the best policy..

No it is not stealing, if you find it in a wallet or something else that clearly belongs to someone it is your choice. The right thing would be to turn it in. If you find 1000 dollars or more you might want to be carefull since you don;t know where that money came from.

Unless I heard someone asking for the specific amount I just found, I'd keep it. I would wait around a little while to see if anyone came around looking for it.

My reasoning here is this. My friend finds $50 laying on the floor in a store. So he picks it up and takes it to the register and turns it in. I see the girl behind him in line leaning forward listening to this and when she got to the register she told the clerk she dropped some money in the store. 10 minutes later a woman pushing a stroller comes up and asks if anyone found any money in the store. Her kid was palying with her wallet and ended up thowing the money out.

Now a suicase full of money I would report....but cash laying on the ground....It's mine.

Well no matter how much it is considered stealing.

If you honestly can't find the owner then donate it to a good cause. Why should you get personal gain from someones elses misfortune. At least if its donated the money goes to a good cause.

If you seen who dropped it give it back, it might be there last buck. A 100.00 or more , turn it in to police, if there is know claim on it you will receive it after 30 days, but at least you tried to be honest.

My mother found a $100 on the floor, where she worked, and turned it into management.

So far no one has claimed it though.

She said it would bother her if she didn't do the right thing.
