This website has a lot of people that appear to be very hostile and defensive. Why is it a person that does not have the same views as as another, people instantly become very defensive and hostile? Can't people accept that others don't see things the way they do and let it go? Why the antagonistic attacks?

mostly just human nature. We all have this need to prove we are the "top dog". No matter what the subject we are all experts and cannot be proven wrong. Its mostly pride and ego. The older generation on here has pretty much grown out of it, granted we may get a little irritated at times, but we can usually keep the insults to a minimum. There are a lot of younger people on here, that haven't figured out exactly how to curb their anger and get their point across just yet. Then there are those who actually hate themselves so much, they feel the need to come on here and bully others to feel better about themselves and their choices.
Some people can't just agree to disagree. Thats the way it is all over the world, if not there would be no wars.

Because to many people the existence of an alternate viewpoint to their worldview is an implicit (not infrequently explicit) challenge. It raises the possibility that their view may not be the true one which, for some frames of thought, is unwelcome. Any occasion which increases awareness of this diversity is liable to be uncomfortable.

The overreaction to this is to insist that all views are right and that there is nothing more than personal truth.
(JFK was shot by several people AND just one, the world is flat AND round? Jesus rose from the dead AND did not? No, it doesn't work)

It would be very odd, statistically, if I had the best and most accurate worldview on the planet. So I need to keep an eye and ear open for improvements. From minor upgrades to a complete new model.

But they do have to be better than what I'm running with now.

You've hit the nail on the head.
Some people simply can't accept that others see things differently. In fact, some quite plainly say that if you do see things differently, you are wrong and will be punished for it.
It's all part of the wonderful world of Religion and Spirituality.

What? You mean I should actually take the time to step outside my own little limited world view and realize that other people exist and have other ways to deal with life than I do? SHOCK OF ALL SHOCKS!

What else do you expect from pea-brained people that cannot think as individuals?

Its religion. There are two subjects that you should never talk about in real life. Religion and politics. The reason is because all they do is cause fights.

This is the religion section, of course people are defensive and argumentative because thats what religion does to people. And, given that Atheists feel like they're defending everyones right to choose against people who are trying to force others to live by their religion...

this place is often a war zone.

I suggest you either get used to it or leave because its not going to go away.

You have to realize that people's self-concept gets in the way of everything. If one has an overly high concept of themselves with a bloated ego, then the moment you question their pov they're going to get defensive. Think of it this way: people have attachments to things they think are "good" or "right" and aversions to things they "hate" or think are "bad" and strive HARD to either maintain their clinging attachment to what they think is "good" or bust fanny to get rid of things which they don't like. So if you're questioning their concept of reality and it bugs them, you're going to have them pushing like heck back at you (i.e. to "get rid of you")because they haven't cultivated a mind free of attachments and aversions.

it appears that way but true Christians only want to help you.
Ex: If i saw you drowning, should i go help you or accept that your drwoning. Obviously thats an extreme example, but thats how I see people that don't agree. I don't see it as not agreeing, I see it as redness and i have the only bottle of cleareyes (tm).

The thumbs down thing is annoying-I'd rather not know that a dozen people think my viewpoint is a bag of crap.

because the ignorance of others is enough to piss me off. I hate that people are so blind to fact, and that they just believe whatever it is their parents tell them to believe.
