Well, my fiance and I are buying a house in March. Seeing as how we're young and can't afford a big house (it's just gonna be a little subdivision house, and we're waiting for it to be built) we can't get a big dog...even though I love them. My two favorite breeds are Golden Retrievers and Siberian Huskeys.

I saw (I think it was on Growing up Gotti or something)...a little brown dog w/ long hair that resembled a golden retriever, except smaller. I also like Mischa Barton's dog.

Any suggestions???

I just need to find something a bit smaller. Thanks!

Try visiting some local no-kill shelters and seeing what you can find Small and toy mixed breeds constantly come into rescue needing homes. Remember, looks are a place to start, but should not be a deciding factor on a dog. You need to consider personality, cost, grooming, activity level, and many other things. http://www.petfinder.com

Since you are young, will a $1000 vet bill be a problem? Emergencies happen and too many people don't plan on it and then are in trouble when their dog gets sick or injured. Be sure you are ready for that. Also, do you both work full time? If so, right now may not be the best time to get a dog. Realisitically, dogs should not be left alone regularly for more than 4-5 hours. No matter how many people do it, it's not right. So then the cost of doggie day care or of dog walkers/pet sitters would need to be considered.

Good luck to you and congrats on your new house. : )

Well the Gotti show had more than 1 dog. Not sure which one you were looking for.
You will need to do more homework on breeds. While it is true that you should not pick a dog by its looks alone; another concern is that small dogs are prone to have a higher energy level. If you are not careful on the choice of breeds, this can be more of a problem. Dogs with higher energy levels need more walks and if bored are going to destroy all they can. Kenneling your pup is OK but at a young age bonding is very important too. If a dog is kenneled home alone and then also kenneled at night ~ this is like being in prison with only 1 time a day to exercise or eat or go potty.
Pets brought home because they are cute are the ones that are taken to shelters after they are not so cute anymore.
Get the right fit for you lifestyle.
A Great book is Simon Schuster's Guide to DOGS. It lists 320 dogs by breed each illustrated, as well as lists temperment etc.
Maybe you'll like a Kelpie 20-25lbs {intelligent & great with kids}, Schipperkee lg, med.& smal of mini...."large is 11-20lbs., or Shiba Inu about 44lbs. but only avrg.15" tall . There are many choices and some of the best choices are made @ the shelters.
*Please do your homework about breeds before looking at just the “cuteness”. GOOD LUCK!

The WORST mistake people make is getting a dog based on how it LOOKS!!!!!!!
You need to look at your lifestyle and see what kind of dogs are right for you.

i live in an apartment and got a boston terrier a few months ago...they are perfect for people who are limited in space and they are very easy to potty train. i also suggest that you go to the american kennel club site and they have a form you can fill out that will help you figure out the best fit for you. good luck!
