My family has a 6 month old Chihuahua. The breeder we got her from called yesterday and wanted to know how she was doing.

He told us that we should consider spaying her, if we do not plan on breeding her. He said she will enter "heat" soon and will act very strange.

He said that she will become more aggressive and will try to escape our home and backyard so she can find a mate. He also mentioned some pertty scary stuff...

Is this true? Will she try to run away?

What are the effects of heat in a female Chihuahua pup?

Thanks

If you are not going to show her, then you should get her fixed. Yes, dogs in heat can act strangely.

The only reason to breed her would be if you are showing her and she does amazingly well. So, if you aren't showing her, then have her spayed as soon as you can. She should be old enough now, so call the vet and set up the appointment. : )

My dogs which are chihuahuas never become agressive or try to run away while in heat. They will bleed for a few days, and that can leave little spots on your floor or couch etc. They will often hump things like favorite toys or other dogs. And in my experience they become much more affectionate and want to be pet more. I guess I can see why they might try to escape if there is a boy dog on the other side of your yard, but I have never seen it happen. Theres nothing scary in my opinion about a dog in heat, other than unwanted accidental puppies. You will want to get her fixed, because they can mate in the blink of an eye if you arent careful, and small dogs are much more prone to needing c-sections. Especially if the boy dog is bigger than them. Maybe the breeder was trying to scare you into getting her fixed?

Yes all the above is true. The dogs drive to procreate is incredible! She will be going crazy wanting a mate which is why they act strange in addition to the hormone fluctuation that will cause her to act differently. She will try to run away to seek a male and the same goes for males, they will flock to a female in heat if they smell her. Be careful when she is outside and don't leave here unattended. It is common for a male, who otherwise does not, to climb a fence or dig under one to get to the female in heat. I, personally, would have her spayed if I did not plan on breeding or showing her.

What he told you is true. There are definite health benefits to spaying also, especially if it's done before the first heat. search "health benefit spay dog" Also if spayed she won't contribute to the gross pet overpopulation problem.

Bleeding is a sure sign some times they get a little lazy and may even eat less.
