next time get your tickets from good travel agent and then she will do all that for you.
more than likely you got your tickets from internet source for cheap price but it becomes more complicated and you wont have a travel agent to speak with once your in China and something might go wrong. I know, been there and done that. Good luck

Contact the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in the closest city. Ask them what type of visa do you need to get and then you either go to the consulate personally to turn in your visa application or mail it to them along with your passport depending on the regulations the consulate has set. Also, check out your country's Chinese Embassy's website for visa instructions. If you are flying into Hong Kong first, then you don't even have to worry about visa. Just show up with your passport and they will stamp you a visa at the immigration point.

If you are staying at a hotel in China ussualy the hotel can arrange for it.
Otheriwse you will need to call Express Visa or The Chinese Embassy and have them do it for you. Most likely you will still need to have a hotel or tour group sponser your trip. The Chinese Govt tends to closley monitor what tourists are doing.

The Chinese Consulate has a website where you can find this out. http://www.visarite.com/chnConsulate.htm?gclid=CKnNjfP-04kCFQ-9VAodtS4P9w
The process is especially easy if you live near a Chinese consulate- they are in NY, Wash DC, Chicago, Houston and San Francisco.
I did mine in person and it was quick and easy.
Your passport must have at least 6 months on it before it expires.
