Calvanism is a collection of doctrine taught in some mainline Prodestant churches. These doctrine has been thought to be drawn out from the teachings of John Calvin, July 10, 1509 – May 27, 1564

Calvin was one of the leaders during the reformation, a period of time when the church was reforming itself around the doctrine of faith unto salvation and breaking free of the burdensome life of salvation by works only.

calvin taught what has been popularized as the
T U L I P theory.
Total Depravity -
Unconditional Election -
Limited Atonement -
Irresistible Grace -
Perseverance of the Saints

Calvin leaned heavily into the predestination idea of once a person is saved they are always saved regardless of what they do or say from here on out.

personally, i like some of what calvin taught, but the pedulum of theology can swing to far in any direction. If we follow Calvin's doctrine to the letter then we might as well plug some batteries into our brains and call ourselves robots, because everything has been planned out for us so we don't even need to think for ourselves. We can do hatever we want and act however we want and God won't care.

This idea does not hold true with what we read in the Bible.

The way I take "predestination" is like this........

God has given us everything we need to get to the end of our journey here. God is everything we need and we find all that we need in Jesus Christ.

BUT, we still have to stay on the path.
1 John Chap 1. 6,7 reads...
6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

toomany take predestination to mean that they can put everything on "auto-pilot", kick back and do what ever they want and act however they want and it really won't matter.

But Paul never presents that in Romans. Instead in Chap 8 he tells he we need to choose between the flesh and the Spirit.

He then goes on later in Chap 8 to reassure us that everything is laid out before us so we can lean on depend on God as we walk this road to heaven.

Keep focusing on Jesus Christ.
You can depend on Him

hope that helps some

Jesus Loves You

Calvinism is a tradition of Reformed theology (comparable to Lutheranism). It is not just interested in particulars of soteriology (like predestination), but the broadest scope of theological inquiry as well. Most of the early colonists were Calvinist, like those who established Harvard, as well as some of our more well known preachers, like Jonathan Edwards.

Reformed theology is being noticed more in philosophy of religion, as it has been better able to tackle some of the issues of post-modernistm and French skeptical thought.

To me, it means a rather severe side of Protestantism. It's often associated with the doctrine of predestination. And I can't think of Calvinism without thinking of their famous "TULIP" principle:

Total depravity of man
Unconditional election
Limited atonement
Irresistible grace
Perseverance of the saints

It means predeterminism- which means that everyone on earth who was not born Calvinist deserves to be there and God made them witohut intention of saving them- what is the point of creating human beings who have no way of going to heaven when they die, who are destined for hell because they are in Asia/Africa/the Americas and/or parts of Europe where Christianity was not stressed?

It means severity and harsh opinions of the less fortunate, as the Calvinists believed God favored the wealthy because they were predetermined to succeed in life, and the less fortunate basically "deserved" to be there because God did not favor for their lives to turn out right.

Calvinism is very offputting.

It means the salvation of an elect few which I suppose puts it a cut above evangelicalism. You don't have many pretentious calvinists who think they are going to be magically saved without having earned it like you do with evangelicals.

Calvanism is a corruption of the truth taught in the Gospels, and served as inspiration for the Methodists, and vindication for the Catholics.

I may be mistaken, but Calvinism has at its basis that we are not in the least responsible for our salvation in any way, shape or form. That we cannot "choose" God, that He chooses us, and even that He makes it possible for us to be saved, that it's not in any way related to our free will.

Calvinism is just a system of theology. It is not my view of theology that saves me, but my faith in Jesus Christ.
