She's 6 month old and she's going to be spayed really soon. Anyway, some people think it's healthier to let her go through her first cycle or even have a litter and then have her spayed. Any opinions?

I want her to be spayed because I don't want her to get any injections or medication to avoid a pregnacy and she can't have any puppies because I can't keep them (it's not easy to find new owners).

It's most beneficial to have her spayed before ever going into a heat cycle.
Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle.

WHEN TO SPAY: There is firm medical research indicating that if a dog spay surgery is performed before the dog's first estrus cycle (heat) the chances for developing mammary gland cancer later in life is nearly zero. If a dog goes through one heat cycle and then is spayed, the chances of mammary cancer later in life are slightly reduced. And if a dog has three or more estrus cycles and then is spayed there is no protective influence against developing mammary cancer. In addition, any dog that is spayed will have no chance of developing a potentially fatal uterus infection called Pyometra. Many veterinarians recommend spaying dogs at about six months of age, which is generally prior to a dog's first heat cycle. Some veterinarians will suggest that the surgery be done at four or five months of age. Be sure to have a discussion with your veterinarian about the "whens" and "whys" of spaying. There is no particularly convincing reason to let a dog "have one heat cycle" or "just one litter" prior to spaying.

Hi I think it's better to just get her spayed because I heard from vets and people who know breeders that when a dog is in heat it bleeds. I think the cycle is 20 or 21 days. Its not going to affect the dogs health. My puppy was spayed at 6 months and she is still as hyper as she was before. Just some people say that the dog will start to mellow out. In my case they were wrong.

before you let her go through her first cycle you might want to consider that it usually lasts up to 3 weeks. Are you up for that????
Spaying her at 6 months is fine. She will be healthy and happy and love you just the same. Waiting is silly, unless you want puppies and are responsible about finding homes for them. Never breed a pet unless you know where the blood lines come from you might end up with a puppy with a compromised immune system like we did when we bred our dogs and boy were we in for it! Spay her and you both will be happy

Spaying before the first cycle will have no adverse effect on your pup. In fact, spaying as soon as possible will reduce the risks of your pup developing cancers and possibly prevent the birth of more unwanted dogs in the community. 6 months is a very good age for spaying and neutering.

I do not recommend waiting to have her spayed. Allowing her to go into heat first can raise her risks of cancers down the road. Of course not ovarian or uterine but cancer in the teats, etc can be higher. It's best to spay beforehand. I also do not recommend a litter first, there are enough unwanted dogs in the shelters.

My puppy is being spayed next month and she will be 10.5 month old and had her first season. My vet said he would not spay her untill she had her first season, (he is quite a traditional old fashion vet) but very good!!! Your puppy should be about to come into season anytime now.I would let her aparently it is better for them, i aint an expert but if you can cope with the blood for a while then i would go for it! Good Luck in whatever you do xxx

As long as she is quite big then I would get her spayed, if you let her go through her first cycle she may get caught and end up pregnant and it's not good for dogs to reproduce so young.
If you let her have a litter, you will have the added worry of your dog managing to give birth unaided and then rehoming your dogs puppies to suitable homes because you would not want to give them away to just anyone.

Have her spayed now. I had my Dalmatian spayed at 6 months old on the vets advice. He said it makes the operation much safer too if it's before the first heat as everything is less developed and the op is almost bloodless. My Dally is fine.

I have always had my dogs spayed or neutered at the age of 4 months.
There are a lot of people out there that don't have the knowledge to pass on any good information, they are just ignorant, that's all.
There are also a lot of myths out there.
There are also a lot of people going for points that they just throw in something that sounds good to them. They also can be quite cruel in their answers.
The fact is that if she is not spayed and is allowed to have a litter you will be responsible for contributing to the over population of the ever growing problem. Plus you will be putting her at risk for possible cancer of the mammary glands.
