Hip scoring is a procedure used to determine the degree of hip dysplasia in dogs and other animals and reporting the findings in a standard way.
The hip score is the sum of the points awarded for each of nine radiographic tures of both hip joints.
The British Veterinary Association uses the following criteria to determine hip score:
Norberg Angle
Subluxation
Cranial Acetabular Edge
Dorsal Acetabular Edge
Cranial Effective Acetabular Rim
Acetabular Fossa
Caudal Acetabular Edge
Femoral Head/Neck Exostosis
Femoral Head Recontouring
The lower the score the less the degree of dysplasia present. The minimum (best) score for each hip is zero and the maximum (worst) is 53, giving a range for the total of 0 to 106

The hip score is a measurement determined by how many dogs in both Sire and Dams lines have had Hip Dysplasia. The lower the better! Breeds like Labradors, Retrievers and German Shepherds are particularly prone to this condition so always buy puppies from reputable dealers! Buy a breed book or do some research on the web too. The more you learn about a paticular breed the better. Hope you find your perfect pet and Labradors are one of the best, Be warned though! They LOVE to CHEW!!

Hip score is carried out by a vet with x-ray to see if the dog can be breed from if the score is too high u r better not breeding from these dogs or the problem may be passed on to the pups.
If the dog is only a pet it will probably make no difference to u as an owner unless the score is very high which could lead to pain for the dog when it gets older.

Some breeds of dog, usually the larger breeds sometimes have problems with bad hip joints (hip dysplacia).
A hip score of the parents is an x-ray to see how well the hip joints are formed on the sire and dam. You will see the score as 4/4 or 6/8 etc, the lower the numbers the better.

Note that the hip score is for the PARENTS of the puppies. Hips cannot be properly evaluated until the dog is 2 years of age.

Hip scores are used to show good breeding in some types of dog and a good score will mean a healthier pet.Hips are tested to check for dysplacia(tendency to dislocate) and this can be a very serious problem in some breeds .This medical condition is caused by over breeding and in breeding and is very painfull for the dog and possibly life threatening ,also very expensive for the owner in vet fees.Only a responsible breeder who scores there dogs she be bought from.If you want a healthy pedigree pet you must check the kennel club web site they have some really usefull info on there about breeders and you can even search for litters from kc registered breeders .Good luck with your puppy!

Labs have a very high risk of hip displashia. I'm not sure if a high or low score is good. Maybe you could research that online, or ask a reputable breeder.
